Not understanding the new helmets

I'm watching guys on the tour and most recently the Balivor GP using the new full shell helmets. OK I understand the aero nature etc. But the bad position they have on the bike surely negates the reason for wearing it?

Not unless the aero helmet makes them have a bad position.

I think those helmets can be opened or closed by the rider. I dunno what you mean by bad position. They are cycling in a group, sitting upright and drafting other riders. TT helmets and bars aren't much advantage unless you are riding out on your own.

I've often thought the pointy aero helmets were useless. They work great in the wind tunnel when you have the perfect bike position, but out on the road half the time your head is down looking at the speedo etc. and the big helmet is sticking in the wind creating drag. I think Sky's new helmet is the way to go.

Interestingly they were discussing this at length on eurosport during the time trial. There are various bits of data that show every helmet has advantages over each other so there is no 'best in show' helmet. Mainly it comes down to the rider and their discipline on the bike. In a wind tunnel the long cone helmets perform best yet move your head even slightly offline and it acts as a parachute. Fabien Cancellara is a perfect example of good discipline here as he uses a mid length helmet but trains on his TT bike with weights attached to the front of the helmet. Over the years this has build up his back neck muscles to the degree that he constantly has his head up and in the correct position.

The shorter stub ones are less aero and actually create a bit of drag and unclean air flow along your back. If however you have the near perfect champaigne glass shape such as Wiggo then it counter acts that. Tony Martin on the other hand can't get the full benefit of that helmet due to his back shape and slightly more upright position.

In short each one has something of benefit but it's more about the riders shape and discipline that need to match it.
