Reciept for a car purchased privately

I'm buying a car next week in Northern Ireland. It's a private sale. I'm not importing it here, I'm buying/keeping/using it in the north.

What's the best way to get a receipt of sale?
I know I'll need one because if I ever want to bring it back to the republic they'll want proof of the date I purchased it to exempt me from VRT.

And on a side note what's the safest way to pay for it? Bank draft? Transfer? Magic beans? :P

When buying/selling cars i usually type up a receipt myself with the date of sale, conditions of sale, price, Vin number etc and have
the seller sign it. I'm pretty sure its not worth the paper its written on if anything went wrong but i do it none the less.

I usually do a bank draft, its handy.

surely that's the whole point of signing and sending off the V5 when you buy it?

I think i might just print off 2 typed letters with the details of the sale and get the seller to sign it.
Just wanted to know what other people did in these situations.

You will have to be resident in NI to do this.
You can't just print out a receipt yourself and then arrive up to the NCT centre to register the car as an exemption.
It must have been registered and insured in your name in NI for a minimum of 6 months.
You will usually have to provide proof of this, ie. utility bills etc to your NI address.

The OP states this in his original post though. He is not planning on importing it here.

Exactly. Not importing it as I'm resident in N.Ireland (for at least a year or two).
Just wondering if there's some legal requirements for creating a receipt for this kind of sale since the seller is not a dealer.

He did not state in his original post that he would be resident in NI.
Simply that he would be keeping/using the car there. He could be working there during the week and coming home to the south at weekends (minus the car).
And he does refer to possibly importing it here at a future date.

OP if you are going to be resident in the North then why do you need this receipt ???? Surely the change of owner ship on the V5 will show the exact date the car became yours.

In the long term, I see myself coming back to Ireland after working in the north for a good while.
And I will be keeping this car for hopefully a very long time.
It seems like a good idea to get a reciept anyway just as a "proof of sale" maybe?
And the VRT folks here in Ireland say you need both a v5 and a reciept to show date of purchase/ownership (in addition to evidence of uk insurance tax, bunch of other things etc.)

Has no one else asked for a receipt when buying a car privately?

A receipt is only needed for people who are buying a car and importing it immediately....they would not be able to transfer ownership on the V5 as they are not UK residents.
Your case is totally different. You would be transferring ownership into your name on the V5 (with a UK/NI address).
Therefore you do not need a receipt as the V5 will show when you bought the car.
The VRT people will be more concerned with you proving that you actually were resident in NI for at least 6 months prior to importing the car.
