Need to reduce image size on a website

I look after http://athenryscouts.com/wordpress/ on a voluntary basis. The photographs are way to large (1-2 mbs). Any ideas what I could use to reduce the size while retaining a good quality image. As the years go by more images will be added so I need to have something I can use and also teach to other people.

Free options for reducing the image dimentions - MSPaint (did I just hear someone shudder?) or just google 'image resizer'.

If you're using wordpress, you can install the smushít plugin to compress your images/media library.

You can use something like http://www.fotosizer.com/ to resize them before you upload them.
Just point it at the folder with the images you want to resize and off you go.

There's loads of other similar programs knocking around, too.

I use the software that came with my dslr, Nikon view nx2. Resize my photos for uploading to the website, originals are about 6/7 MB. Reduce them by pixal size to 1024 pix long side. This also reduces file size to about 100kb (which is still quite large) works for me. Better resizing before upload as you retain the quality, plug-ins tend to reduce quality.

Based on your server configuration and preferred browser, one of these 2 plugin might come in handy:

I'm using the first one for 2 websites, and I've drastically reduced my web space consumption. I'm not affiliated with any of them.
