Brakes ;) The back axle is low in oil or else the wrong oil.

Don't know if you ask in 4x4 & Tractors & Diggers & Plant they would have better knowledge.

In know on our David Brown 995, when the brake 'liners' were worn down to the metal, there was a noise like that. Also gearbox and back axle are the same compartment, with the same oil. The final drives are different though, taking 140 Gear oil, a much heavier oil.

I'd be checking the brake shoe lining aas well, cos metal on metal means iron filings , not good news

AFAIK the mf has a straight axel , so doesnt have final drives (could be wrong on this)

If its making avery sqeaky noise its most likely the brakes shoes are gone and you can check the bak axle for oil too if its very low or blocked in some way she won't lift or be very slow in doing so.

Back hubs probally low in gear oil, if it is then the bearings have to be done, wheel off, ring of bolts open and take off hub, we did one in a 188 and father forgot to fill hub with oil, lasted about 3 hrs before growl appeared again. bearing had to be redone
