The curtain raiser to The Open on the links at Castle Stuart. Conditions set to be warm and calm so scoring should be low. The field seems to be lighter than in previous years to my eyes? Not as many PGA Tour pros as I seem to recall in previous years.

Irish players in the field this week are Higgins, Harrington, Lawrie, Hoey, Lowry, Thornton & McGrane.

Robert Rock showed a return to form at the Irish Open and is my e/w selection for this week.

Clarke and Maybin are also playing.

Why do I feel that this could be Padraig's week?

    Paul McGinley is also playing.

Shane Lowry going well, -4 through 12 and a shot off the lead.

Great 66 from Lowry - and how about McGinley, five-under through SEVEN!

Having Scottish flags on the pins looks class, I must say.

The course is getting torn up today. If scoring continues at this rate the cut will fall at something ridiculous.

Cut currently at -3, Ernie looks in trouble.

true, see Herrick Stenson in at -8, also a -7, -6 in clubhouse to name a few. Here's hoping Lowry & Co. keep with them.

Quite a bunch of no marks up around the top of the leaderboard, who will no doubt melt over the weekend. Molinari looks a good shout to go one better than last year.

Word of praise for McGrane who shot two tasty rounds. A weekend off for Happy Gilmore.

Mickelson played two shots today that were hard to believe, catch them on the highlights.

I like the fact it is a links, but the scores are a bit of joke.

    Way too easy for them.

Not disputing your assertion that it's too easy for them but sort of expected with the benign conditions.

They are just lashing the ball . when wrong they still have a shot from rough and are just off green.

Yes only chance course had was a bit of wind. But i guess that is the way evey links is these days. But some fairways are over 100 yrds wide.

Any stories of pga pros coming over to Ireland in the last week to get in some links practice? There is usually a few knocking around.

Aberdeen asset management won't be too happy with the picture at the top

Most of those assets will become distressed over the weekend. Don't worry.

Stenson is knocking around the top and Mickelson not too far away. It's not too bad for them yet

Gutted for Harrington. Bad double for McGinley on the last but at least he made a cut. Hopefully McGrane can kick on also.

Besides Loch Lomand, who were in financial troubles, could a new links like Kingsbarns now hold this event? Maybe on Trumps course in a few years when it beds down. They need a better test before a major.

I think it would be good to hold this on the other Open venues in Scotland, they did it with Carnoustie a few years back, although that was more as a test run for the Open itself.

Some great venues like Troon and Turnberry and its a shame we only get to see them every 8-10 years for an Open held there.

Maybin gone top -8 through 11. Fair play to him but that's ridiculous scoring, and no sort of warm up for the open.

Gmac tells it like it is!

    Maybin -9 after 12 - could he shoot 59 ?

-6 for the day no? Thats what European tour site says anyway.

Yeah, I think it momentarily said -9 but that was a mistake...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,591 ✭✭✭✭Aidric

Maybin ripping the course a new one, -8 through 14. Lowry shot a 2 under par round of 70 to finish at -6, in a tie for 39th at the moment.

Something I found curious last night when looking at that American Brooks Koepka. He plays on the challenge tour and has had 3 wins on that tour this season already. His world ranking is listed as 126. i wouldn't have though there would be much ranking points for those events? He doesn't have any high finishes in the regular tour to boost him either.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,591 ✭✭✭✭Aidric

Maybin finished with an 8 under 64 and has the lead for now, great round.

Look out for Paul Casey again, -4 through 8 and 2 off the lead.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,511 ✭✭✭golfwallah

Got great odds for outsiders Maybin (leader in clubhouse with Jacquelin at 13 under) & Fisher (at 14 under on 7th).
Hope Gareth and Ross go all the way.

Stenson up there now and phil 1 back. Could get exciting yet!

    Hi,

The Scottish Open will be at Royal Aberdeen next year (an old links course) but expect The Renaissance Club to be awarded it in the coming 2 or 3 years. It's a cracking new links situated next to Muirfield and plays very long from all the way back.

Regards the poster who asked if The British Open courses could be used, the R&A have an agreement that none of their Open courses are used for The Scottish Open. So it won't be on Carnoustie (despite it having been there in the past when it wasn't on The Open rota), Troon, Turnberry, Muirfield or St.Andrews

    Ally

Slipping away from Maybin. The magic of yesterday hasn't showed up today.

Yes - Mickelson played a silly shot giving him a 9/10 feet putt back which he missed.
