I went back to work and notified the welfare office straight away and they said i was due a payment but they'd stop it and issue a cheque as the payment would've been for too much. I'm at work all week and saturday morning and as i've no wages until the end of the month i could really use the money for petrol and food asap. Can my wife who i was claiming for as well cash the cheque in the Post office if she takes in hers and my ID?

No. She can lodge it into a post office/bank account for you, but it will need the usual amount of days to clear that way. She can't cash it herself. So if you need the money ASAP you'd either need to get onto welfare or find a way to get down the P.O. yourself.

You can however, get cheques cashed at any P.O. within the post code/county of your address, so perhaps there might be an office with longer hours than your usual that might be open.

If your a member of a credit union they might cash it for you when you explain the situation.
