Three years after an Irish exchange student and her friend were beaten unconscious and robbed under a Bucktown viaduct, the woman who acted as the getaway driver has agreed to testify against the bat-wielding attacker as part of a plea deal.

In exchange for her cooperation, Marcy Cruz, 28, faces a 22-year prison sentence and will avoid being charged with first-degree murder if the most severely injured victim dies, court records show. Cruz, who pleaded guilty Tuesday to two counts of attempted murder, agreed to testify against co-defendant Heriberto Viramontes, 33, at his scheduled trial on Sept. 9.

So many thoughts come to mind after reading this story. #1 is that this woman, Marcy Cruz is an absolute POS. It does my heart good to know that she will be off the streets for a very long time.

As for her 'co-defendant', there is a special place in hell waiting for him. While out stalking his victims , he commented “Look at all these rich white bitches”. Neither one of these women are 'rich'. They were two women who were working to improve their lot in life. He saw them as a chance to make a quick buck.

It's just good to know that he will be doing an even longer prison stint when he comes up for trial in September. I can only wish him a hellish time when he is locked away.

She would be out in six months over here

I doubt that she'll do all 22 years. She'll end up playing the 'mental illness' and 'drug addict' card. She'll also 'find Jebus' while incarcerated. She'll end up doing half of that time.

And if she played that here, she'd be let out straight from the courts.

Marcy Cruz, 28, pleaded guilty to two counts of attempted murder and was sentenced to 11 years in prison for each count, said Cook County State’s Attorney’s office spokeswoman Tandra Simonton. She must serve at least 85 percent of the sentence.

Just found this in another newspaper.

Outstanding job by the States Attorneys !!

We need similar 'accomplace' legislation here urgently. In the US, if you are a mamber of a gang that rob a bank and one of your gang shoots a guard, you are all liable to be charged with murder because you are considered part of a conspiracy to murder.
Here you had the rediculous situation this past week where a judge threw out murder charges against two defendents that lured a boy to a local park and killed him. why? Because the BOTH blamed each other for the act and the judge felt that it was impossible to determine which had stabbed the kid, so they both walk. Disgusting. They were both guilty under US law and would both have done time, here they do none.

Maybe, but half of 22 years is way better than being out in half of 3 or 4 yrs.

    proper sentence. Nice one.

The age old "mental health" excuse.....

The night of the attack the article states Cruz left her two kids with her boyfriend while she went out clubbing with another guy whom she then had sex with.

She's not suffering from metal problems she's just a scumbag skank.

A justifiable sentence for a sickening crime.

Mental illness isn't an excuse but can be a valid explanation. If it's concluded via psychiatric evaluation that a person is violent due to mental illness, what's the issue? If they are, they are. They still get locked up, just not in a jail.

That said, the way the woman's mother is going on about her being "a good person with a good heart" is sickening. She clearly isn't, daughter or not. And an assessment may show that her mental illness did not cause this behaviour either. It's one thing a relative saying someone is how they are because of mental health issues, it's another for them to undergo a thorough evaluation by professionals.

I remember reading about that when it happened. That's good news. America is messed up in a lot of ways but they don't mess around with their sentences.

I don't know, I saw one of them not even use punctuation once. Another guy doesn't start with a capital.

I got a little note on Facebook this morning. Apparently, the Cook County States Attorney that is leading this case is the sister of a friend of mine.

I've sent my best and thanked her for the job done so far.

One down and one to go.

Because that always works in the US?

Im not saying it mightn't, but do you understand just how large and money driven the prison industry (yes, industry) actually is over here?

Most blood boiling example: http://thinkprogress.org/justice/2012/08/13/681261/mississippi-schools-sending-kids-to-prison-for-misbehaving-in-the-classroom/?mobile=nc in which basically the judges and the school administrators, local officials etc were all profiting from the local privately owned penitentiary, which was trying to get more inmates. The videotapes of the court proceedings would make you see red.

Ireland's justice system has its own glaring problems; we have ours.

I have a pretty good understanding of the American prison system, considering I was born and raised in the States. My family worked in law enforcement (Police and Sheriff). I have family and friends that work in several different prisons. I have had several very close people to me who were sent to prison (one of which was farmed out to Texas prison). Not that any of this matters to anyone else.

I am absolutely delighted that this filth is no longer going to on the streets.
