    Hi All,

I have some knowledge of how a car works but I have absolutely no idea how much things cost to fix.

I have a 2005 Opel Vectra & I need to get a gearbox oil leak fixed, what kind of price should I be looking at. I was quoted €300 at a local garage, is that about right?

    Evd.

Tbh, it depends on what's leaking.
300 doesn't sound like a lot but without knowing what actually leaking it's impossible to say if it's a good price.

Is there noises from the gearbox?

There is no noise at all.

The mechanic said the leak is not to bad, he said the reason the cost is so high is that the gearbox has to come out and it is awkward etc to do so.

He also mentioned that with a gear box leak the clutch could be contaminated with the oil, is this true?

    Thanks for the replay.

Basically gearbox and leak from several places:

    Drive shaft seals NS/OS
    Input axle seal
    gear selector seal
between sections of the casing etc. etc.

If say the input axle seal leaks the point of leakage is very close to the clutch assembly and the clutch can easily get contaminated.

Not sure how difficult it is to remove the Vectra box but in Saab 9-5 (related) the front subframe needs to be dropped to get the box out so it is a major undertaking. This is pretty much the same job as changing the clutch, which should be done at the same time as parts are only an extra €150 to 250 or so (check carparts4less.co.uk or micksgarage.ie for prices). IMO, the release bearing should be replaced too while at it.
