Ordering a brand new car?

If you order a new mainstream brand of car from a main dealer, what are the chances the main distributors have one in stock, provided of course, it isn't, say, an automatic, an unusual colour or specced with a number of unlikely extras, whereby it has to be a factory order.

Are all the cars imported into central stock, the base models in the most popular colours? Is that roughly how it works, or do they carry a full range from the get-go? I suspect the former :)

Yes, depending on the car of course, if you are not too fussy re options, colour combinations etc, they will possibly have a car in stock in Ireland.
In my opinion, its a far nicer experience (if you dont mind the delay) ordering your own car from the factory. You can have your preferred colour combinations for no extra money and a couple of small extras for little cost could make all the difference to you.
Last time I was buying, I ordered the car I wanted and Im very glad I did.

Most mainstream dealers have access online to stock that the Distributor has in the country. If it is a model that is commonly sold with no extras then chances are the Distributor will bulk import it as they know they are easy to supply to their dealer network and they will not be stuck with them. Anything oddball then you are less likely to find it.

My first new car, I ordered an uncommon colour, so had to wait for 3 weeks. But the last car, I had in 2 days.

If it's something that you see a lot on the road, yes - there will be plenty of stock around the place.

Not many distributors hold stock anymore. It's generally only Ford & Opel, but for other manufacturer's the dealers will hold stock and swap with each other (happens with Ford & Opel as well).

No one keeps anywhere near as much stock as they used to, mainly as they were burned badly in late 08 when everyone had to give away petrol models.

Anything in particular you are lookinf for OP, or is it just a general question?

I'm hoping to buy a new car in 2014. either a new Audi A3 Saloon or a Golf 2.0 TDI DSG. I'm suspecting no dealer will have that model of Golf 7 in stock and the same for Audi (Thinking of the 1.4 petrol 140 bhp)

Golf - dealers are stocking 1.6Tdi Trendline and Comfortlines.

Current model A3 they are stocking 1.6Tdi SE models in 3 and 5 door.

Anything else is factory order in general.

Plan on a 12 week delivery time from order date. Usually come in sooner, but you can be unlucky and they can take longer. Ordered an A3 1.6Tdi SE 3dr on the 20th December. Upgraded wheels and sound system - delivered to driver on the 19th April, and that wasn't the worst offender from Audi at the start of this year.
