One of the PirateBay founders is about to capitalise on the fallout from the PRISM revelations:

I never felt comfortable that whatsapp requires your mobile phone number so this might be a better alternative.

    Sounds exciting says I.

Untrusted connection on the heml.is site. :/

edit: Want, but not sure how it's better than gibber for example.

True enough, but after watching TPB: AFK (youtube), I reckon that Peter Sunde would fight really hard to protect user's data. I got that untrusted connection when viewing on my phone (chrome) , but not from a desktop browser (firefox 22), strange.

I think the fact that its designed to be attractive is quite a big thing. things like WhatsApp take off because they're simple to use, intuitive and look decent. I think any privacy focused app that aims to become popular would have to offer the same.

Also I think most people will move account and messaging platform easier than use a new client for existing platforms. Seting up an account on a new platfom is actually easier than configuring add-ons or alternative clients. So if I want someone to use Gibberbot or Pigin for their facebook or google chat I think it'll be a non-runner but switching to helm.is with a straightforward install should be more attractive.
