Constant teeth clenching

    Hi everybody,

Just looking to gleam some knowledge from you folks,

When I was younger I used to grind my teeth at night. These last two weeks I've been getting woken up by my wife to tell me to stop grinding my teeth. As well as painful jaw, dull headaches.

Now I clench my teeth 24/7, all day everyday my teeth are pressed together. I cannot leave my jaw slack, the only thing I can do is sit my tongue between my teeth to stop my jaw closing fully but this concious effort only lasts a few minutes.

I'm studying full time at the moment and the only dental treatment I can afford at the moment is my Prsi covered exam.

However I can't actually keep waking my wife up with this, she's a heavy sleeper so I don't even want to know how hard I'm grinding that I'm waking her.

But also the constant two week headache has gotten the better of me now.

Does anybody have any suggestions that they tried for this before getting a guard?

It's something I will definately get but will need to save toward so need a solution for the next 6-8 months.

Get a dentist to make you a HARD all acrylic night splint. It will protect your teeth and can help de program the grinding if made properly. Do NOT get a soft boxers gum shield type one they make it worse.

Its going to cost a few quid, but it will save tens of thousands in repair work to you teeth if you allow the grinding and clenching to continue.

I'd be the first to recommend a proper guard Skylar Gray Lifesaver but I am in no position to get one believe me if I could I would be as these headaches and sore jaws are really getting to me.

As it is I'm still paying off a loan from getting my wisdom teeth out and having a bridge put in at the front of my mouth.

I am putting away money every month for the guard from this month on but at a rate at 50 quid a month it's going to be awhile before I can afford it so I was looking for suggestions for the short term if there are any. If not it'll be the spare room and a pack of painkillers!

    Just an update to this-

I got an Adidas shield from a sports shop that covered top and bottom that forced a gap between the teeth.

Its working fine, while I know it's far from a perfect solution it has stopped the clenching and the resulting headaches which is fine with me.

I am going to get a proper decent hard shield made however this will work as a stop gap until I manage to save enough or find a "trade swap" somewhere with a dentist that needs glasses!

As somebody involved in the medical profession I by no means endorse this as a solution more a temporary fix.
