    If you haven't already, take it to a reputable mechanic and have them replace the brake and gear cables (inners and outers) and the brake pads. Ask if anything else is worn like the chain, the cassette or the chainset. Replace if necessary. Ask them to check the wheels for trueness, spoke tension and rim wear. Get new wheels if they are in a sorry state.

    As for what upgrades you want after that, it would depend on what type of riding you plan to do. Some people like aero stuff, some people like light stuff, some people (me) like durable stuff.
