I've recently taken over the running of the farm at home and applied to Bord Bia for the quality assurance scheme. However the man before me was a bit lax when it came to keeping the animal remedies part of the blue book up to date. Does the inspector go through this book or will the Bord Bia book do for the inspection? Any other tips on what I should have ready for them.

I'I tell you all after Thursday . Having inspector out :o Ya checking blue book and that all details of dosing are recorded etc. Hopefully the sun has him in good form!

Had a recent inspection ,yer man was ok, they're particular about the remedies book, your herd register, safety in the yard, safety statement, slurry/dung, animal welfare, ..I think the list is online...

The only two problems I had were the safety statement (and a sign to say that it was available on request) and a foot disinfectant bath.

    How did you get on?

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

I was the same, I had the safety statement (did it online, think it was on the FBD web site) & told him when he arrived that it was available to see, but I hadn't a sign up saying that it was available to see.

I keep a big red plastic storage box turned upside down in an unlocked shed beside where everyone parks (there is a tap nearby also) with a bottle of dettol left under it, just in case any unannounced inspector arrives its ready to use.

great to see a safety statement is of such importance in producing quality traceable beef

Wait till they start looking for method statements before you squeeze / dose a bullock .

Just wondering how much of a grant you would get by being in the bord bia scheme. I just want to know for future reference as I will be taking over the uncles farm

Hi guys, this thread is a bit old but if not just for hope I'll raise my query none the less.

We joined Board Bia and had an inspection recently. We need to get a 'sharp container', first aid kit and a Foot Disinfectant sign. For those of you that have been through this palava can anyone please suggest where I might find a Foot Disinfectant sign?
I can find sharp containers and first aid kits online, so am I okay in assuming that a standard First Aid Kit will suffice? If not could anyone please advise?

I notice in the earlier posts to the thread that there is mention of a grant of 8000. I couldn't tell if that was humour or serious could anyone elaborate if not.

    Thank you all

Id say you could print off a sign yourself and put it in a plastic cover .
I think some people use a jam jar for holding the needles .
There is no grant , in fact it feels more likely a recieving penalty half the time when you dont get paid the QA on some animals !

im due an audit soon.. not worth a single cent to me selling weanlings and killing cull cows .. think when they contact me ill tell them im opting out.. can join it down the road again if I change my system or start killing a few lambs.. be better to opt out than go down on their system for having a heap of non compliances

Dawn give an extra 4 cent/kg on cull cows grading O. The first inspection is fairly ok, more or less do what you have to do for dept anyway.

Use an empty copper syringe container for needles(well its in the medicine cabinet anyways and a few bent ones in it).Has a screw cap lid. That covers that.
First aid kit and disinfection sign were not looked for the last time. That was this summer.

We were asked about rat poison and to sketch the locations of where the poison was. He went through the medicine cabinet taking VPA and batch numbers and expiry dates of whatever was in there. Spent a good while looking through the books too and looking at the prescriptions to see if they corresponded with what was in the cabinet. Our sharps container is just an old biscuit tin with a hole cut in the top but has a label on it saying sharps and he was happy with that.
