I'd love to have the time, dedication and products to clean, polish and wax my car but I guess I will have to get a professional to do it so I want to know if there are any around and how much should I expect to pay?

There are one or two around Dublin.

If you could find the time; for the money you'd pay for a detailer to do the job, you'd actually do a fairly decent job by yourself...plus, when you are done, you've got quite a bit of product left over. Plus you have the satisfaction of having done it yourself, and your neighbours will never talk to you again, because they'll think your crazy! :D

Hat's off, I'm seriously impressed with the altruism shown on this forum and "the other".

    Spirit Detailing
    Detailing Shed
    Elite Autoclean

Rule of thumb is 200 per day - I'd reckon on 2-3 days depending on how poor your paint is and how thorough a job you want.

Try Fintan at washmevaleting.com. Got my audi done recently and seriously impressed with his work, couldn't believe the result, he came to the office where i work and did it there and then so was very handy too. Would have no problem recommending to anyone!

    Two posts....both recommending washmevaleting???

    Welcome along Fintan?? :D

And the OP asked for a Detailer, not the quick washes the company you posted are offering!

    Fair enough Fintan! :D
Only kidding - welcome along Mathew!

I doubt Mags will be getting contact with them - they dont even mention the process, claying....and they'll "machine polish your car up to four times", all for 150 quid - must be an animal with the polisher!

Sorry guys I've been away for a few days and could not catch up on the thread but the car is only a year or so old and should not need massive work as the paint and bodywork are in good nick in fairness.
I don't envisage having to have 2 or 3 days work done but I wonder what results I could get myself? Would a really good clean and tar, followed by a clay be a good start? I don't have access to a polisher so would have to polish by hand, what polish?, and then finish with what?
I could get an AutoGlym detailing kit or similar and would this be a good starting point?
I honestly could not find the time to spend days at a time detailing my car and so the original question and could it be done in a few hours/half a day?
It's an A6, Quartz Grey metallic and in fairness looks good even dirty but it look s superb when clean and shiny.

Polishing a german car is tough for a DA, with super resin polish by hand i dont think you would get rid of many imperfictions, but it would fill them in

Rapid detailer might be good i dont know as i use express was which i like a lot also +1 for the smell ... banana milkshake

Given that the car isnt too old, and hopefully has been washed reasonably well in the past, then a machine polish wont be necessary.

What is necessary to make a substantial difference, is a full de-contamination of the paint work. That would involved a wash, de-tar, de-ironise, clay, hand polish (optional) and then protection.

The de-ironise / fall out remover step is, along with claying, a step that will make a huge difference, as its most noticeable on silvers, greys and whites.

Polishing by hand on newish paint wont make a whole lot of difference, but it will help to hide some of the swirls, so it might be a step you will consider.

If you commit to a full days work and pick up a few good products, I guarantee, you will be very pleased with the results you can achieve by yourself.

No apparent swirls and yes it has been carefully washed by hand every time. I have used a power washer at times to apply water and shampoo followed by a hand wash with mitts and then a power wash rinse. As far as waxing goes I have used Demon Shine to finish followed by a dry and the finish is okay but not long lasting and not the level of finish I would ideally like.
So a day would not be too bad to spend on the car and a polish does not seem necessary? but what to finish/wax/seal/protect the clean car with?

You are going with autoglym, why not follow up with HD wax

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,377 ✭✭✭Curran

For that colour, I'd recommend Bilt Hamber Finis-Wax

Im sure Vectra will be along to agree! :)

It looks great and its very durable!

Think he's skipping the polishing stage, so that opens options to any protection he wants.

Although, AG HD Wax is a superb wax also, and with the right prep, will look great!

Secret to any good job on a car, is the prepartion....you could put anything on after that, and it will look good! ;)

Here is the users post to go with it. ::
I have used Bilt Hamber products for about 3 years and TBH not a lot comes close for quality and finish results.
Their Snow Foam is an extremely effective pre-wash..not much beats it
Their Clay Bars are proven to be amongst the best available and use water as their lubricant!
Their Autowash Shampoo only needs a teaspoon to get great suds
Their sealer, Auto Balm is an awesome product providing fillers and a very durable high gloss shine
Now there is a new product:
    Finis-Wax:
    Here is my review:
    Well......
Gave the car a deep clean with neat Washing Up Liquid and hot water
Clayed the whole car with Bilt Hamber Auto Clay lubricated with water and detergent.
Very little in the way of contaminets in the paint..but I wanted to strip the old wax and sealer layers off to give the Finis Wax a good 'key'
Dried with my Poorboys extra large drying towel
Then.....began applying the Finis Wax one panel at a time taking care not to apply too much..Very sparingley is recommended
Bilt-Hamber also recommend leaving it up to 10 minutes before buffing off.
I discovered that no more than 5 minutes was a more realistic time, as it was a little easier to buff.
Slowly worked my way around the car. As I finished one panel, the previous one was ready to be buffed with the provided blue MF towel..a good quality one incedently.
I also applied it on the wheels and they looked amazing afterwards!
Then stood back and admired the car......WOW...Totally impressed!!
As an 'All in One' product..This stuff is seriously good!!
