    Help please
My sister in law, living in the North, recently bought a car in Dublin to bring North. She is now being asked for proof that VAT was paid in Ireland when the car was new and seems to be getting the run-around.

I know some of you guys have sold cars out of the country, so hopefully you can help
Is there a simple or recommended way to get this information.

    Thanks

It should be being a private car . But if it turns out not to be let her leave it registered at your address for 6 months & she will be ok then to register it up north.Sorry i thought you were living in the south if you have anyone in the south she can use their address.

I had a similar problem to this a few years back when bringing a car from Southern Ireland to the North. DVLNI mentioned was vat paid, I didn't know and she explained something to do with Northerner's in Border Counties buying cars 'New' in the South bringing to the north and then them ending back down south in a year or two for sale again, can't remember exactly but something on them lines but they never mentioned it again so I didn't ask, anyway I had the car mot'd on it's Southern plates and presented to DVLNI in Coleraine and they then said I had to get a Certificate of Comformity before they would issue a reg and v5. This was done at a main Opel dealer in the South, they looked and the car and it's chassis no. filled in the Cert. and DVLNI issued the reg and v5, not sure if it's the same today but I hope this helps.

She could try asking the UK European Consumer Centre for help, their task is to assist individuals with cross border transactions within the EU.
