    Hi
I am in the postion of getting a new laptop with work and have been offered the Sony 15inch vaio sve1513p1ew or if I put 200 euro towards the price I can get a MacBook Pro 13 inch retina md212.
I would love the mac but am nervous as I have all ways used a PC and might find my self lost with the mac, does any have experience with the Sony above ?
Should I keep with the PC and keep my money?

I should go with PC! Do not waste money on Mac-s! My experience with Mac was terrible one so with a PC you can easily manage whatever you want!

A pc and install Linux, get out of the Windows habit.

Switched over to a mac for my current laptop. Takes some time to get used to the OS, but I'm really happy. Have had it for 3 years now and love it. It's a 13" Macbook Pro, 2010 edition.
Go into Compu b or Harvey Normans and give it a shot.

OP, what kind of programs to you need to run on your PC other than the usual Word+Web kind of things? Are there any in-house or specialised programs that you need to use that are Windows only? Those are the type of questions you should be getting answers for before you blindly rush for a Mac.

Thanks for the replays ,I think I am going to give the mac a shot, don't need any special program's or anything on it as I still will have access to a PC the days I am in the office, and it wil be a personal and work laptop...

I'm currently in a similar situation, have the option of Mac or PC. Previously, I've always used Dell laptops, with varying degrees of satisfaction. I have installed Ubuntu OS on my current Dell laptop and find it really good. Doesn't drain the RAM anywhere near as much as Windows 7. However, that laptop is coming to the end of it's life so I'm considering a move to Mac. I have been doing a bit of research and most websites "best laptops" lists seem to have the Macbook Pro or Air consistently near the top. They cite the build quality, longevity, ease-of-use, reliability as some of their main features. I wouldn't be overly concerned about the OS as it seems fairly intuitive and definetly alot more stable than Windows. My only concern is software compatability with OSX. However, most software packages seem to have an OSX option now so probably wont be an issue.

I would normally say go for the mac, but that sounds incredibly cheap of your company to expect you to fork over €200 for a work laptop  I've never heard of that before.

Depending on what you do, the mac offers a nice balance between windows and linux, you get a great terminal and a stable GUI with no driver issues. Windows 8 is just awful and linux can be a bit annoying at times, but still better than windows 8.

In your situation I would go with the windows machine and put either windows 7 or linux on it.

Better still, both. Dual boot it.

If the price dif is only €200 the Mac must be an old model, a refurb, or the Sony must be an absolute beast.

Unless you have a particular need for Apple programs you should stick with the Sony. You regulary see Mac users installing Windows to their machines to optimise their capabilities, but never the other way around.

That' probably because most Windows users are blissfully unaware of anything other than Windows, such is the grip of Microsoft.

Thats probably because most software is wrote for windows.

Sadly. As i said, such is the grip of Microsoft.
Most Mac and Linux users can function perfectly well without them though. I cannot remember the last time I actually needed any Microsoft programme.

Buying your own work laptop or part of it is becoming very popular. Tends to mean the employee takes a lot more care of their device too :)

That's because in order to install Mac on PC you have to build a hackintosh, it's not officially supported by apple....

I've been using mac for the last few months, and I just don't think they're worth the cost.

Hardware wise, you're normally paying bout hundred or two quid just because it's apple.
And nearly every mac user also has a windows pc. why is that?! eh

I'll admit, look wise, macs are nice. But they just don't seem worth the extra cost.

Sure. Like the guys who pay big bucks to drive around in Porsche 911s which are just a re-badged and flattened VW Beetles from the 1950's. Did I mention the Ceyenne? It's just a big ugly VW SUV with a different badge and a slightly different price-tag ...

    ... .
I have 2 Mac minis and a Mac Book, no Windoze PC although I do run Windows XP Pro on one Mac mini in emulation mode. This is to support a business critical application for a friend.

Maybe Mac users cast pitying glances at their Windoze yoke cowering in the corner and say to themselves 5 or 6 time a day "Thank God I think different, Thank God I think different ..."

Try that line on a Porsche driver. :D

OS marked share as of June 2013:

    Windows- 91.51%

    Mac- 7.2%

    Linux- 1.2%

    Pretty large fúcking corner.

As a mac user I can only say... are you having a laugh. The difference between a 'super' car and a normal car does not compare in ANY way to the mac V pc debate.

Your Macbook might be a re-badged and flattened Windoze laptop (having the very same shabby components under the hood) but a Porsche 911 has somewhat more steam than a 1950s VW Beetle. ;)

Just because it is the most popular, used by the majority, doesn't necessarily make it the best option.....look at governments, voted in by a majority, but still utterly incompetent.
If computers were always sold blank, no OS, then I doubt that Windows would be as popular, given that it would have to be paid for extra. Linux, in it's current form, would be a major player under that scenario, it's free and just as functional at an everyday level.
I'll stick with the 1.2% and let the 91.51% deal/suffer with the vast majority of viruses and malwares aimed at them.
There are a lot of ignorant (as in of the full picture) sheep in that "pretty large ******** corner".
Any way, who knows how many use Linux? It's not like there are "sales" figures to go by, or activated (restrictive) licences to count.

Check out the values by installed-base or by company value.

If 91.51% of the drivers in the world drove Nissan Micras, would that make the Nissan Micra the aspirational brand of the 7.2%?

If you're paying €200 towards the Apple laptop, do you get to keep it if you leave your job? If not, I'd choose the 'free' work laptop and forget about it when you finish work. Afterall, it's only a work tool, like a pen or pencil.

Also, just remember that it's a work laptop and your company has every right to see the logs of what you've been doing on their laptop... So it would probably be unwise to install any games or watch your fav (ahem) 'movies' on it.

No it won't ... mac just doesn't have the gaming support I want. The free photo editing programs on the mac are awkward as hell to use..and don't get me started on iphoto!!!!! ..I can't wait to get back to a windows machine.

And yeah, I know about wine ..but it does lag a little.
And I did say MOST mac users have a windows pc (and dual booting is the same thing).

And, I can't don't justify the cost of a mac. When hardware wise, you're paying more because it's apple :/.

No, it simply does not make sense.

If a guy starts of driving a Ford and eventually upgrades to a luxury car the difference is vast. To imply the same occurs when purchasing a mac is erroneous.
Macs are fantastic machines, Apple do their best to convince everyone the difference is huge. Unfortunately the difference is not Porsches 911 but instead more like upgrading from a Kia to a Ford

No-one makes bad cars any more......some just prefer to pay a lot more for theirs. They all only get you from a to b in the end.
Me.....I prefer motorbikes any day. Are we drifting off topic here?
