Ford Mondeo Gearbox options?1

    Hi all

I moved to Cape Town 3 years ago and brought my 2003 Ford Mondeo with me.

My gearbox went the other day and the gearbox specialists are quoting about 2000 euro to fix it

The mechanic suggested that I could source a refurbished or secondhand gearbox myself which should make it cheaper.

I'm not mechanically minded so am concerned that some of the quotes I'm getting back from a part sourcing website might be the wrong gearbox and then I'll be doubly shafted!

Any suggestions as to how I can ensure they're quoting me the right one (the mondeo isn't a common car here). e.g. I think my car is the 115 bhp but I know there's a 90 and 130 hp model, could I use a gearbox from any of these?!

My car is a 2003 5 door hatchback Ford Mondeo LX TD (diesel) 5 speed manual (Is that enough info?!).

Apologies if these are obvious and stupid questions!

    Thanks for any advice

    Simon

To be honest you would be better off sourcing a second hand gerabox from say gannons or somewhere else adverts.ie, donedeal etc

Just get your mechanic friend to put it in for you. I had to do this with a car a few years ago, didnt cost me too much in the end...only a few hundred euro.

    try this place.

I replaced a gear box in my 02 avensis last year. Second hand gear box €180 and €180 fitting. Still running perfect. 2k is rediculous. If its not a common car then maybe they have to source outside the country.

How did you get car over by the way? Was it not more expensive thanreplacing?

How much would shipping from there to the OP cost though?

Hi all thanks for the replies.

Yup it turns out shipping is going to be the problem. It's not a common car so is impossible to source one locally (particularly diesel). I used a couple of the UK sourcing websites and the best I've got is about 450 pounds with shipping so I guess I'll just have to take that hit!

I moved over with work who gave me a container so brought the car for free. Got three years out of it so can't complain!

If it's an LX TD, then I'd be pretty confident it's a 90bhp version of the engine.

For most of it's life that Mondeo got 90bhp in the LX, 115bhp in the Zetec and 130bhp in the Ghia. They did introduce other power options to the different trim levels at some point, and the 115ps and 130ps variants were TDCI from about 2002 onwards.

    Yup you're absolutely right!

I used the VIN number to find out the exact specs and it's the 90bhp model.

It says the gearbox is a 5-Speed Manual Trans - MTX75

I see that a number of ford models use this gearbox and even had a guy telling me I could use the gearbox from a diesel ford focus...could that be true?!

If you need an expert answer, try this website:
--EDITED-- (Actually, I'm not sure on the forum rules so please PM me if you want to take a look at the website I am on about. If someone confirms I can post a link then I'll put it in the message)

I'm not affiliated - though I did use it the other day as I had a Volvo specific technical question and I got an expert answer so I was happy using it.

It can cost a few euro to get an answer, but for peace of mind and the fact that you're speaking to an expert should make that worthwhile. And you can request a full refund if you're not happy.

Lucky move to Cape Town - spent many happy years there myself.

Did you try DHL Global ?
They have a direct shipping route from Rotterdam - Capetown.
