The cooo is not turbo whistle, it's the sound of the air being let out at the blow-off valve.

    Wastegate-gate....touchy subject! :p

A neighbour near me has Diesel VW with a Blow off valve, sound of it reminds

of one of the old Volvo trucks going by, cool but silly.

That cooing noise marks you down as an idiot to those in the know. Unless you're making several bar of boost and >250 bhp you won't need a blow off valve on a diesel.

The reason they're fitted on petrol engines is because there's a throttle butterfly in the way and if that gets closed all of a sudden after sustained power delivery (like when you let go of the accelerator pedal) there's nowhere for all that boost to go except slam into the butterfly and reflect back into the compressor where it can do real damage. The BOV allows the boost to dissipate and keep everything in order.

A diesel engine doesn't have a butterfly so this isn't such a problem. At stock tuning levels there's enough room in the intake manifold for the boost to go without needing to get rid of it.

You won't get that noise just by fitting a straight pipe either. There's nothing especially wrong with doing this - it makes the turbo louder if you like that sort of thing. You might piss off your neighbours though with the noise. And I've heard from others who've done it that it can be tiresome at cruising speeds on the motorway.

Its a stupid idea. A golf is not even a moderately fast car. Sure, some of the GTI models are quite fast.
But putting a blow off valve noise onto a sub 200hp diesel (fwd at that) small car is just idiotic.

Why would you do such a thing? Do you want to look like an idiot?

Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

Tasteful mods, less is more job.

Don't be seen as a "felter".

The VW driver near me even had a Nurburgring sticker on his boot too....

You have two threads in two fora about this

You are still out of your brain if you are seriously interested in this sort of thing.

    Here is what you want:

A de-cat is a decent mod on a tdi. Your turbo will work better. I would replace it with a silencer if you do any sort of long distance cruising. As for the cooo, it sounds ****. Don't do it. I you really want the unnoticeable performance increase get one that hisses and doesn't make that stupid noise.

I had to YouTube this sound.
It's the funniest and stupidest sound I've heard in awhile.
    Why would you want this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,411 ✭✭✭Dartz

    Do it.

And put a duck call or whistle or some other daft wind-blown noisemaker on it.

If you're going to fail, own the fail and turn it into win.

Well that's a lot of flapping in this thread.... The famous coo is from the wastegate closing affecting the turbulence, it's more pronounced in later cars due to the vnt setup (turbulence from the rapid changing of direction and slowing of movement of air). A dump valve in a diesel is stupid!

    VNT turbo

    vnt2.jpg
    VNT%20Turbo%20Mechanism.jpg

    A noticeable difference...

    VNT coo

    Wastegate coo

    :D

And why it all started ;)

So next time you hear a coo from a felted car remember it's symbolising a Fiat tractor :pac::pac::pac:

I'll shut up and hide now....

Thanks dgt, I never heard diesels do this, I still think pertols have the best sounding valves sounds, none better than the Supra, its fantastic but may sound terrible to the same people complaining about the coo.
