The Back to Education Allowance and The 2013 Budget

    Hi,

Just reading about the BTEA on CitizensInformation and how the last budget has affected payments.

"The Cost of Education Allowance (currently €300) payable to Back to Education Allowance participants will be discontinued for new and existing participants. (2013)
The weekly rate payable to new Back to Education Allowance participants will be equal to their previous social protection payment. (1 January 2013)
A standard maximum rate of €160 per week will apply to new Back to Education Allowance participants who were previously getting an age-related reduced rate of Jobseeker's Allowance. (1 January 2013)"

Just a little confused by this, I'm going into 2nd year in September and I will be getting BTEA again this year...

Does it mean that my payment of 180 euro per week will stay the same since I got it last year or will it be reduced to 160?

    Thanks in advance

As far as i'm aware, you keep your 188 it's just new applicants who'll be on the new rates.

Just wondering what are the odds of BTEA being effected in October's budget..

I don't think they can do much more with it really...

They've already reduced the cost of education payment at the start of the year from 500 to 300 to zero... :(

and new applicants are down to 160 euro a week...

Can't see them taking anything else off it

Hopefully not, I'll be going back onto it this coming college year.

I guess there's no chance of them scrapping it all together, is there? I heard that people on BTEA are not included in the live register figures so I doubt the Government would want thousands of more people being added to the live register.

They forget to factor in the cost of travel to College. It'll make lots of people think twice about returning to education. Shame.
