    Mostly into Video Editing,
Wish to put 2X1gb hard drives in a raid 0 for:confused: videos

Can anyone advise which H/D brand that would suit best.

7200 spin ie WD or Seagate perhaps
    Thanks in advance.

ps Have 120 gb ssd for programs and a current WD terebyte for storage

Does you system support SATA2 or SATA3?

What motherboard do you currently have?

What video editor do you use now, and what is the config of your current setup?

While I'm new to RAID myself, I do know for a fact that you don't want RAID 0, since that means if one drive dies, both drives die, and you lose all your data.

You probably mean 2x 1TB drives (not 1GB), so for a consumer level RAID, look for Western Digital Red (from my research, no other consumer level hard drives are specifically built to be used in a RAID array). Get a couple of 2TB Reds.

I'd go for the WD Reds too. Maybe even the 3TB ones.
Good for power consumption, quiet, has longer warranty than equivalent Seagate or WD drives (blue, green) and has a few RAID features. Decently fast too even though they've got a lower spin speed.
They're better value than the RAID edition (older ones are RE4, RE3 etc., if you're looking through them). Their latest enterprise ones are denoted "Se". 5 year warranty, but not worth the marginal cost over Red, for home use anyway.

If you want pure speed and high capacity, you could get the larger Seagate 7200.14 drives.

Thanks Lads for your replies,I suppose it would have been easier to give my build. (Built Nov 201
    Tower with Asus P8 z68-PRO m/b
    inc. 4 Sata 6.0 gb/s (2 grey )( 2 navy blue)
    4 Sata 3.0 gb/s (blue)
Intel i7-2600k with LGA 1155 chipset.
16 gb Ram 4 x4 gb (crucial vengence)
120gb SSD ( Cosair Force Sata 3)for programs + WD 1 TB for storage
    HP dvd Re writter.
    Windows 7.
Nivida Quadro 512 mb Graphics Card ( this was recomended to me for Video editing)

The SSD is maxed out which was not the intention..and am considering installing a 240 GB and re-installing the programs on that.
I have Pinnacle ultimate 12 and Adobe Premier on board but my present video I put on the Pinnacle. And although the video is complete and rendered...there is a small adjustment to make and redo the rendering...but the video ..when I try to get back into it ..it playes tricks and I think that the SSD is at fault because it's maxed out (perhaps).
Also the feature... Lucid Logic..which allows the change of the on board Graphics to the dedicated Nivida Quadro goes AWOL for whatever reason.
I don't ever change that anyway as the system changes over itself if necessary ( I believe ??

A 240 or 256 gb SSD I am sure would fix that problem..but I thought that a Raid arrangement would quicken up rendering. I would still have the I TB WD drive available.

Perhaps a reconfiguration somewhere will get me the best out of this build.

Thanks again for all your comments...I take all on board and money would not be the problem in buying the right stuff.

Lucid Logic was fairly buggy to begin with. You could try a BIOS update on your board. It's supposed to switch automatically but the benefits are not really great.

You could run ccleaner to get rid of some excess baggage from the SSD. There's often quite a lot of space to be retreived from temporary files.

Also, watch out with Adobe premiere it'll often save files on the SSD unless you tell it to otherwise. The default is c:\Users\yourusername\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Common. You should check this folder to see if there's files there that you don't need. The AppData folder is hidden, so if you can't find it, let me know.

You can change this in Premiere by going into Edit->Preferences->Media (LHS of window)
and changing the folder for media cache files and media cache database.

I'm not sure if RAID would speed up the rendering as it would normally more a processor thing, but I'm not sure given you description. Overclocking the CPU would most likely help. It would be low risk getting up to 4GHz, though you could make it to 4.5GHz if you got yourself a decent cooler.

If you did want to go for RAID, I would probably go with RAID 10 which would give you the speeds of RAID 0 but with redundancy. Otherwise, maybe RAID 0 two drives and backup to a third... maybe externally.

Hard drives got a speed increase recently enough too. Most are capable of well over 150MB/s now. Maybe you just need a new drive.
