Mk1 Focus Speedometer intermitantly stops working

Bascially just noticed today for first time, that the speedometer wasn't moving, and the digital odometer wasn't counting up the miles.

It started working again after awhile. Any ideas on possible problem or fixes ?

    Its a Mk1 Ford Focus. 1.4 petrol.

EDIT: I have also had an ocassional problem of the car cutting out when coming to a stop etc, it might only happen 1 in 20 times so I didn't take too much notice, from looking on the net this could point to in conjunction with the speedo problem the "VSS" vehicle speed sensor needing to be changed ? is this an easy job to do ?

It's a tricky job for access but is a diy job. As for the cutting out at lights I would replace the vaccum tubing pcv.

    How to replace vss:

Going to bring it to an indy garage I use , they are very good. Booked in for first thing in the morning.

Will report back on the results.

could simply be a fault with the dash couldn't it? Mk1 Focus known for this....pick one up at a scrappie and slot it in to tell if it is.

I think they call that the instrument cluster, just going by what im reading online from others with similar problems, if its the instrument cluster the other gauges usually have problems too, in my case its just the speedo and obviously the odomotor isn't clocking the miles as the speed sensor isn't working.

The speed sensor is the cheaper fix too so hopefully that's it.

That sounds like the speed sensor all right, I had a similar issue with my Honda in the past and replacing the sensor fixed it.

Generally speaking if the speedo is the only dial affected then it is the sensor (diagnostic scan will also help to confirm, when the sensors fail they log a code in the engine ECU)

If all of the dials and gauges are affected then it is usually the cluster.

Ok got it hooked up to the diagnostic this morning, it is the speed sensor, so by the time the part is delivered , I am hoping to have the car back tomorrow evening.
