presume its cartridge bearings. what wheel?

MAke sure that you seat them so that they are sitting level in their slot.just put a gentle push so they are gripped.
Get a socket size that they edge of the socket sits on the outer race. If it doesnt sit on the outer race you will damage the bearings ad will be useless.
Now this is where you have to be firm but solid.
get a wide mallet or something to tap the socket.
start off gently so that you are happy the socket is staying put.
then start to increese the force with which you tap.
Slowly. the bearing should start to slide in.
when i do it I usually put a layer of grease on the inside of the hub to aid the bearing in.

    9 separate bearings each side

    http://www.alexrims.com/product_detail.asp?sc=1&cat=1&cat2=8&pid=12

8 speed shimano cassette and freehub

one lot of bearings was nice and shiny the other 9 was dull so i assumed they were from one side or the other

anyhow i couldn't get either lot to go back on the non drive side

    the last one wouldnt fit

bearings on both sides are the same size. Are you sure you're pitting 9 in and not 10? Don't use too much grease. Try disassembling, clean cup and bearings again. Make sure there's not crud in cup. If bearings aren't shiny, consider replacing and inspect cone. May need to replace if not smooth.

Lightly grease cup and replace bearings. Grease again. They really should fit if that9 came from the wheel

there was 10 bearings each side and no problem there

i got them in with a push of the cone

front wheel runs like a rolls royce

back wheel seems rough on the drive side

the freehub gave a bit of trouble recently

i may replace the back bearings now that i know the drill

do they normally run smoother on new bearings?

should do if greased right. If your bearings were worn its likely the cone is wotn too. That will make it feel rough. Might be easier to replace the cone now too while you're in practice

i used regular black lithium grease

    i'll replace them anyhow
    thanks

If you have the cone tightened up too much, the wheel will run a bit rough and will tend to grab the axle (balance the axle on your flat palms and the wheel should spin without the axle moving). Loosening the cone just slightly will fix that. If it's spinning freely but still rough, it's more likely to be wear.
