rMBP - Video Playback/Network Issues

    Hi,

I recently bought a 15" rMBP refurbished from Apple.

I have all my movies/TV shows etc stored on a network drive (Synology 212j fwiw).

I was trying to stream a 1080P film using the VLC player, but it does not run smoothly, as if it were pausing to buffer frequently.

I am not sure what the problem is, but it runs fine on my TV (so not a router problem), and runs fine when I download it directly to my Macbook, so probably not a playback option. Plus the download in that case takes about 10 minutes (file is 12GB), so the transfer rate is faster than the playback rate.

Any ideas as to why it won't play normally when I am streaming from the NAS?

    Thanks is advance.

I have a 212j and find data transfer involving the macs to be awful. Some blame Synology's software, but more seem to blame Lion/ML.

The thing is though that when I copy it to the SSD, it is more than fast enough to suggest that streaming playback should be no problem. I mean it transfers 15x faster than its playtime. Odd.

The GPU is hardly to blame would it be? It was rather hot. If it were the problem I'd just return the Macbook, I've had it less than 14 days...

How are you copying, over WiFi or Ethernet? The Wifi on my MBA seems very slow.

I have a 212j and it's fine even over wireless. I'm connecting using AFP via 5GHz Wireless N and we're talking 20MB/sec or more transfer rates.

WiFi. It's because the copying rate is fine and playback is fine (once copied) that has me stumped as to why it buffers when streaming.
