A4 1.9 TDi AFN engine timing belt broke

    Hi All,

I have a 1996 A4 1.9 tdi and the timing belt let go at about 60mph. Should I buy a timing belt kit fit it and see if the valves are bent or is that pointless .

Should I just buy a 2nd hand engine.

My engine is a 110bhp AFN engine , I have been told an AHU 90bhp engine is the exact same except I have to put my injectors / fuel pump and turbo on to the AHU engine and then it will work with my ecu and effectively make it an AFN engine.

    All help appreciated.

That engine is going to need a rebuilt head at the very least. Valves and tappets will be ruined from pistons crashing into them. If you're lucky the pistons and crankshaft will be ok.

It'll be easier and cheaper to replace the engine.

My advice would be to get another car.

Unless you can fit the another engine yourself (it'll require a new timing belt kit & full service), you'll be cheaper buying a car.

    Sad reality

I can do the work myself just wondering if there was any chance the engine was ok.

Pretty much guaranteed you'll have bent valves.

Spot on all 8 valves bent but pistons and everything are ok, so 8 new valves going in , new head gasket an T belt kit and fingers crossed after that.

You should probably get the tappets/lifters replaced too - if the valves have suffered damage, chances are they have too.

You're right the hydraulic tappets needed replacing too, anyways 8 new valves , head gasket , stem seals , t. Belt kit , it cost me just shy of €300 for parts and about 18hrs of my time and its going better than ever much more satisfying and cheaper than scrapping it.
Cheers for the help anyone who chimed in.

jas its amazing too,,talking to a garage owner the other nite in the pub and he said that a woman came to him and told him about her broken down fiat punto,,he went out, towed it to the garage and realised she had snapped her timing gear/belt

so anyway he did what he did,put in a new timing belt, tensioner, water pump etc

started and drove out the gate,,,no valves no nothing bent

that why he has great time for fiat

It's the old 8v non-interference engine. Can't go wrong with that, never a chance of bent valves etc :D
