    Budget? :)

I've heard ipod Shuffles are pretty sturdy (older ones with no screen) and have a fairly good sound.

It's difficult to recommend a "sturdy" one, myself, I use a clip+ at the gym, and everywhere else, and have been for the guts of a year (the clip+ itself is hitting it's 4/5th birthday). It's my rough n' ready music device and I have dropped it so many times that I couldn't give you a ballpark figure...I would have no confidence in recommending a sturdy device when the one I already consider sturdy has broken on you twice :P

Another clip, but add some Phoenix-proofing to it :P

I use a 6g iPod Nano, it takes a good old battering and has never given me an ounce of trouble.

Have had a Clip zip and plus but they didnt last more than a year and 6 months respectively, anything out there sturdier?

how did it break / malfunction?
you can get silicone covers for the zips and clip zips - I'd buy another one and get one of those. they are not expensive- 4gb clip zip for 30 euro or so from amazon. cover another 5 euro delivered.

On head fi a few people have popped them open and re-soldered the earphone jack back to the board. Or sometimes its just the pins are bent back.
