Design of Utility Room

I want to plan the design of a utility room that will give best function for everything that goes on it the room.

I am talking approx 1o & half ft x 10 & half ft in area.

The main uses of this room will be:

    - Clothes needed to be washed for family of 5 so different area i.e. whites / colours waiting to be washed.....

    - Ironing ( I like idea of fold down ironing board system & behind a door)

    - Cleaning cupboard - hoover, brushes, etc

    - Other storage i.e. some food storage

    - Other e.g. maybe bottles or recycling material

I would love to see some pictures of Well laid out Utility Rooms that function really well & don't feel too cluttered

I know I could move 1 or 2 of these requirements above to our large garage but would like to keep what works best in house.

Where could I view some designs or pictures of good utility rooms

Also not essential but would like a traditional look to it, but maybe that is something I can customise after!!!

Would appreciate some advice and pictures please

    Thanks

Have a look on Houzz - you'll find plenty of inspiration. But be careful, it's addictive!

For me I would love a square or wider rectangular shape than you typically find, if you see it as an area where you might have a clothes horse. The typical narrow rectangular shape leaves no room to manoeuvre around a clothes horse while it's erect.

If you're going for the ironing system, make sure there's room for an actual ironing board and iron to be stored as well, in case you ever have a sudden urge to go iron somewhere else.

If you're going to spend a fair amount of time in there (ironing for 5!), maybe get a high shelf with a plug by it where you could keep a radio or something (rather than taking up a socket and counter space with it, or having a cable dangling down from a shelf).

Think about whether you want doors over the washer/dryer. On the one hand they cut down noise, but on the other they're yet another door to manage while trying to put clothes in/out.

If I had the opportunity to start from scratch, I'd put the dryer above the washing machine - makes it easier to empty the lint catcher. Having had poor experiences with condenser dryers, I'd also make sure it was next to an outside wall to allow for an external vent pipe.

I'd also try to get a window in the room somewhere (not just a back door), so that you can leave the window open a little.

Hmm, turns out I just want a fabulous utility room!
