Got a little De-walt drill from b&Q about a year ago, worked well but now when the battery is put in the charger, the red light keeps flashing continuously with no charge to the battery, anyone any ideas?

    Is the battery itself faulty?

No don't think so,its doing it on both battereries.

Seems like it is the charger then.
I would start by visually checking the connectors in the charger to make sure they have not been bent back by constant usage.
If you have a multimeter you could also check the charger voltage.

The connectors see to be ok,it never had much use either.
I have a mutimeter but not sure how to use it,what to put it on to test it.

If it hasn't seen much use I would say most likely the battery's are f**ked Dewalt are famous for that, next time you are buying a cheap drill/screw gun go for the 100 euro Makita the are by far the best value cheap drill/screw gun going and last for years

Have you tried the battery with a different charger?

Check the voltage on the main power terminals.

Is it a very fast fladhing light? These normally have a Thermistor to measure battery temp, this could be faulty...

Couldn't see the two batteries going at the exact same time.
Jays, whatever about de-walt batteries I don't think the brand would be seen as cheap.

The red light flashes fast, could the thermistor be replaced if this was found to be the fault.

Thermistors would be easy enough to source. It is difficult to say how difficult it might be to replace without opening the unit.
    Is this a 12V or 18V drill?

Set your multimeter to measure DC volts. Select the range above the value of the drill voltage. Check on the battery for the polarity of the pins ( + and -) . Carefully insert the probes into the charger and measure the voltage. Make sure the probes do not touch each other or short out the charge connectors.
If you are unsure about doing this then get assistance.

Without seeing a circuit diagram or an actual unit it is difficult to give a troubleshooting guide but the first place to start is checking there is voltage output.

Would also be worth checking the actual voltage on the batteries themselves.

Suggest you Google "dewalt charger flashing red light". There are lots of queries and responses. Plenty of bedtime reading.

Yea check the resistance between the thermistor (3rd connection) and ground. I'd imagine it should be around 10k. If you've two batteries, compare the resistances of both.

Yea,I think I will just bite the bullet on this one as now I think of it,I had mentioned to someone that I was getting a burning smell from the vent of the drill.

A burning smell from the vent of the drill is possibly from the carbon brushes, it's not unusual.
    Unrelated to the charger.
