    hi

    I've a 24-70 f2.8 and a 70-200 f2.8 (both sigma) lenses and I'm looking for filter holders for them

I'm having a bit of trouble understanding exactly what I should be looking for in terms of holders -- I don't need anything fancy or overly expensive

sometimes, at the start of the day, I wish I had something I could easily clip to make a picture in long exposure but after that, I don't see myself using it that often

any tips/ideas !? thanks in advance

Well it hugely depends on what filter system you are using or want to use.

There are several different types... I use a set of Lee 100mm filters for instance, the holder comprises of a 100mm filter holder then an adapter that fits to a 77mm ring that then screws on the end of my lenses.

Here is a link that shows the components of such a set-up.

The Lee stuff is expensive though. Cokin are not a bad cheap alternative

Also you can get circular screw on filters that require no holders.
And as with most things photographic, a huge amount depends on your budget!

    the 24-70 has a 82mm screw in filter -- the 70-200 has a 77mm screw in filter

so, the filter holder should be a bit bigger than this ring sizes !? selecting which holder to use is being my biggest problem -- I'm guessing the filters themselves would be a different money matter

It doesn't sound like you need multiple types of filters so you could just get whatever filters you need in 82mm screw-in and get a 82-77 adapter.

Hey - slight bump on this thread - just wondering if you made a purchase OP, I am in the same boat.

In an ideal world I'd buy the Lee system - would eventually like to be able to - but for the moment finances don't allow.

So, I'm looking at the Cokin 'P' and 'Z' kits - with the 2, 4 and 8 stop filters.

Can anyone advise on which of these would be most suitable - I will primarily be using with 28mm 1.8f, 50mm and Canon 5D.

    Any advice welcomed!

    hi there...

    no, didn't buy anything--

11811's link to lee filters was very informative-- so, i decided that instead of buying something cheap i'd rather wait and get more money to buy something better...

... so i bought the sb-910, instead of filters :D

Ah, I see. I think it definitely makes sense too!

I was thinking that maybe it would be better to invest in the holder then.. and go for the Lee Foundation kit.. rather than Cokin - so that I could upgrade the filters as I can afford to. Just not sure what filters to buy that are 100mm then.. not very familiar with these systems at all!

i do want to get filters at some stage

like i said in the original post, i wouldn't be using the filters that much, although i've changed my mind about getting something cheap

That's what I did. I got a Lee filter holder foundation kit and a Lee adapter for the lenses I planned to use it on. (make sure you get wide angle adapters for wide angle lenses)
I then got Hitech 100mm (they are 100x125mm) filters (they fit the lee holder), which according to what ive read are better than cokin, but not as good as Lee. The price somewhere in the middle.
So far I haven't felt the need to get better filters. Not that I know what im doing anyway.
