I've a 2l tcdi for over 4 years (60k miles - UK car) now and the only thing to fail in it was the boot door lock which jammed shut and had to be replaced. Other than that its been fine except for an intermittent issue where the esp light comes on and the brake pedal goes hard/power reduces. Only happens when started on a frosty morning and solution has been to turn off engine and start again. No one seems to be able to diagnoise problem. Found that by putting into garage on cold nights the problem doesn't arise.

Getting about 40mpg on average with a reasonable mix of motorway driving. Its heavy on front tyres - 15k miles a set. Its a bit crude on the clutch taking off but once on the move its smooth and quite good to drive. One pain is the lack of a spare - having said that I only got 2 punctures/blowouts in the 4 years and they happenned within 3 months of each other requiring a call €250 call out each time. I bought a mondeo space saver and of course haven't had a problem since. Back seats are fine for kids - reasonably easy to access but unfortunately boot space very limited with seats up - especially if I want to carry the spare.

Personally I'm happy with the car and will probably get another one whenever I manage to get some money together again.

If you are looking at 3 children, then school run the 2 seats in the back might be a little small particularly if you are carrying stuff and kids get older. You could look at a Galaxy then you wouldn't have to worry about changing at all if you got one and looked after it. My brother has one for his four kids an smax wouldn't have the space they need. Best of luck
