Turbo gone!! Worth repairing?

Just got the dreaded news, that I was expecting, that indeed my turbo is knackered. "Falling apart" was the phrase he used.
First the turbo went a bit whiney, then a rattle started and next was the plumes of smoke as it attempted to burn all the oil in car.
I am just trying to figure out if it is worth repairing at this stage of its life?

It’s a ’02 Galaxy Diesel with ~240,000 miles on the clock.
A replacement, factory rebuilt, turbo is priced at €450+VAT(not sure if there is any warranty included or not) and then labour on top of that.
    NCT is due next month.

Worth repairing and selling? Or do I try and shift it to someone who might want to stick a turbo in it(if such a person exists)!

I'd appraise the condition of the rest of the car and figure out how many more bills you have coming your way over the next 6 months or so.

Even wear and tear items can cost a lot when they are added up.

It looks like lego, how many hours would it take for someone to install this if youd never done it before?

    This^^

Basically at the moment with a shagged turbo and little or no NCT the car is worth little more than scrap value.

What you need to figure out is how much it is going to cost you to keep it on the road in the 6-12 months after doing the turbo.

If the car is generally in good order apart from the turbo and needs little or no work to get through the NCT then it is definitely worth paying to get the turbo done.

However, I have worked on lots of these cars and at 240k miles they generally need plenty of TLC so this one could well be a candidate for the scrapper.

Currently trying to track down one from a scrap yard to get past the NCT at least while I look around for a replacement car, hate buying a car because I am forced to.

It is generally going well, no rattles etc. body is in good shape too, is it worth anything for scrap? (pie in the sky question, i know)

Turbo would be all that is needed for NCT.

Personally, I hate the car, but it is functional because of number of kids. I wouldn't mind if it blew up...

You really have to look at things like tyres, shocks, discs and pads to work out how viable it is as a runner.

As for its value, I haven't a clue.

Well if you're looking for a car then I think a visit to the bangernomics thread is in order :).

Oh I've been hanging around there for too long, lots of nice cars but none that suit me right now. I'll be back...

Got a turbo off these guys, they had it in stock in Galway, €350(ex VAT) with warranty and certificate for the balancing etc.
Mechanic didn't rob me for the labour so pretty happy.

NCT next week so hopefully nothing falls off it before then!:)

Thanks for the help and advice.

Do us favor come back next year and tell us how the car got on.
Nothing like real live reports to say if it worked.
Pay attention injectors often tend to need replacing between 250,000 kilometers and 400,000 kilometers (ball park ~250,000 miles )
If injector pump goes there often exists repair kits for €100 rather than buy new pump for €1000
Most diesel engines seem to be able to exceed 500,000 miles but the economics are the problem so lots get scrapped at ~300,000 miles more to do with the repair costs for car than the engine is clapped out problem

It's a PD engine. Doesn't have an injector pump.

Passed the NCT without any work. Sweet, now to see how it behaves in the winter.
