Edge 500 issue

My Garmin Edge500 has died completely after an apparent recent software upgrade. I was away on holidays and it was not turned on for 3 weeks, but when I went to use it last night it showed a message indicating it was doing a software upgrade (despite NOT being connected to a PC in the 3 weeks) and then it died - completely - bricked - wont even turn on and a hard/master reset (Page/Power/Start buttons pressed together and then released) is not working either. I have had it on charge for the day so its not out of battery..

Anyone any suggestions? I suspect its a case of return to Garmin, but would try anything in the interim.....

have you tried connecting to my garmin to see can it pair up. I had problems a few weeks back after an upgrade and this was the only way to get it to come alive.
Not anyway techie so have no idea what worked to wake it up again

Thanks. I've tried this as well as a Garmin recommended reset........but all to no avail. It looks well & truly dead :(

Battery might have just fully discharged, plug it into a wall socket and let it charge for an hour

You could try the steps recommended at this link. Even without doing the software update thing (assuming your software is up to date) then connecting the Garmin to a PC with the Menu button pressed might be enough to coax it back to life.

Once you have tried the procedure advised by MediaMan above, I suggest you contact Garmin at support@garmin.com and make sure you get a reference number for your complaint. Response time is a little slow as they are dealing with a huge backlog of complaints mostly around version 3.2 of the software. They are not doing themselves or their product any favours by not bringing out a comprehensive fix. See https://forums.garmin.com/forumdisplay.php?219-Edge-500 to get some idea of the volume and variety of the issues. You are not alone.

@GreyEagle Thanks for the link to the Edge500 forum. I had tried Garmin's recommended reset method (hold down all buttons except Lap/Reset for 10sec until screen lights up), but to no avail. That forum link suggest hold down all four side buttons for 10 s and (surprisingly) that has managed to get it to reset. I connected it to the PC and it ran thru a software update. SO its now working again and updated to Version3.2 firmware. I'll need to rebuild the profiles in it etc, but much appreciate the link. Sorted !

Just one more point, try not to pull out the unit from the computer without first going through the 'Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media' procedure. The Edge 500 really does not like it.

It may be of some use to Edge 500 users to outline the problems I have encountered so far with software Version 3.2 and the solutions I have implemented.
    1. Edge 500 will not go into mass storage mode when connected to computer. Reason was I had previously disconnected without using Safely Remove Hardware procedure, my fault. Disconnect from computer, switch off Edge. Press and hold Menu while reconnecting to computer. Continue pressing Menu until Edge goes to mass storage mode, about 10 secs.
    2. Distance freezes when stopped, say at traffic lights, resumes randomly. Problem with Auto Pause feature in version 3.2. Switch off Auto Pause. Wait for next software update.
    3. Elevation issues. On start up Elevation shown typically -100m. Stays there for some time(2-3 mins) then rises slowly to normal. Same occurs when unit enters Auto Power Down mode, say at a lunch stop. Solutions: Switch off Auto Power Down mode, Monitor Elevation on initial start-up and do not press Timer Started until elevation roughly equals your pre-set Elevation Point value. Check your previous rides in Garmin Connect to see elevation steps caused by this issue.
If anybody else has had similar issues and solutions I would welcome their contributions.

    Help needed.

My edge constantly searching for Sats

The sat position page shows they are up there(my etrex vista showing same positions and picks up 8 super strong signals)

This has been going on since monday for no real reason( did not do any updates etc) . Any ideas

    +1

I have 3.2 version and no issues whatsoever - possibly HW changes on recent units?
