GUI members in a society

I am part of a fairly big golf society. Ther is a mix of GUI and non GUI peolpe involved. Lately the GUI members have been trying to throw their weight aroung a bit and bully the committee in doing everything their way and only their way. One way the committee is looking at to quieten them down is to forward their scorecards to their clubs after each outing. Some are coming in with excellent scores off their GUI handicap and I know for a fact they would face a cut if their club knew. As far as the committee knows these guys do not return their cards to their clubs.
By the way the committee is a 5 man group og 3 GUI and 2 non GUI members.
    Any thoughts comments please...

Really, I've been playing society golf for quite a while, I scan and email or post on the board my society scores and never once has my handicap been adjusted, and I have followed up on more than one occasion.

i like what your committee is thinking and would endorse it.

As long as you're not worried about losing those members I'd say go for it. :)

Most Societies play off forward tees so i would expect to score better at one of those outings than on my regular course. The SSS for the forward tees is usually a couple of shots easier.
Not sure if the returned score would be taken into account by the home club.

One of three things here :

    1) when you're filling out the away scores sheet you are not putting every single detail on there. You need to do that, otherwise your handicap secretary has to go ringing the golf course to find out what the details are.

    2) Laziness from your handicap sec to find out what you omited from the club.

    3) your handicap secretary is taking note and keeping them in mind for end of year review.

the 3rd one is the wrong thing to do, but it could be happening.

Like you, I return all my scores. Even the disaster in dunmurry!

This shocks me because they are supposed to return all cards from all outings whether they be qualifying competitions or society outings to their home club. They are breaking the rules of golf by not doing this.

Had this discussion recently with our h/c secretary. Society outings, while on a full course, are not qualifying as there is no CSS. Where a player beats SSS, it is taken into consideration at the end of year review which needs to be approved by the GUI.

With regard to the OP, I'm on a society committee and we return cards that are better than SSS to the clubs on behalf of our members.

I'm demonstrating ignorance here but why would there not be CSS, I always thought once there are 12+ in the outing then a CSS can be calculated?

How can you have an accurate CSS when a huge amount of people playing in societies not have official GUI handicaps therefore their handicaps are rarely accurate.

From what I've seen in societies the scoring does be pretty low due to handicaps being very severe on lads.
Non golfers not getting more than 18 for example... Yet these lads effect CSS?

Know of a non-golfer who was given a handicap of 24 in his first outing with a society.
He proceeded to demolish Killarney and return 51 points.

He would prolly have played golf 3 times since I've known him(7 years).
Ridiculous but true. They refused him first place:D Proper order too.

Any idea whether the golf digest events are qualifying for handicap adjustment? Assume all playing have GUI handicaps but no idea if a CSS was calculated. Played in Knightsbrook today and had 38 points and wasn't mapped. A CSS would be difficult to calculate as we played off greens on most tees but whites off all par 3s and some others so difficult for them to measure the course. Will report in away scores book in any event.

'In Ireland, players and clubs must report to Home Clubs:
    (a) All Qualifying Scores together with the relevant Competition Scratch Score.
    (b) All Non-Qualifying Scores fromTeam and Society Golf played over a course for which the Union
has allotted a Standard Scratch Score together with notification of the relevant SSS.
    '

The above is from the Congu rules. It doesn't say just good scores, it says all non-qualifying scores from Society Golf.

Thanks for the feedback guys. The committee have announced yesterday that it will facilitate sending back scorecards to home clubs if players wish. That way they are just suggesting it & hopefully things will calm down.
The society has been running fairly well for about 18 months but now it seems some people want everything to suit themselves. The committee are trying to be fair to everybody. Thanks again

Just out of interest, what are the GUI members doing/trying to do that has resulted in this (maybe slight form) of agro? Why do they need to be quietened a bit?
