    I know someone that has gone from 53/39 to 50/34 and also 12/25 to 12/27. My question is will this make much of a difference to her % wise on the hills. Thank you. Ps. Good luck to all doing the ring

    should make the hills a bit easier for her , but as the saying goes, hills never get easy you just get faster

    39x25 = 41 gear inches = 15.7 kmh @ 80rpm
    34x27 = 33 gear inches = 12.7 kmh @ 80rpm

    Will make a difference while climbing. Not a big one, but still.

    I took a loan of a bike with the same compact gearing as you're asking about and I couldn't believe how easy it was to get up hills. Some difference between the 39 & the 34 ring going up.

    That seems to imply a 20% difference between both which if right would be a significant gain to her. Hope i read this correctly? And I know that more hills is the real way to improve but this lady is almost 63 well able cyclist but is finding hills that bit tougher

    Closer to 25%.

    My lowest gear is 34/28 and like to go up very steep hills. I very rarely use it, but it is nice to have it.

    Without changing to granny ring or putting on a mtb cassette(e.g 12-32 ) which may involve changing rear derailleur it would be a cheap fix.

    €25, the 30 may not work, someone else might be able to advise if you give rd spec.

    Get the easier gears for her, the mountains are the place to be on a bike, it doesn't need to hurt too much

    Go for it, it'll make a big difference. Go for more than 27 too if you can. From the sounds of it, she won't be battling out for any races or doing hill TT's so make life as easy as possible. I went from 39 to 34 and later, from 25 to 28 and love it. 30 might be an option too.
