I've used Avira Free for a few years now however as of 30 June it wouldn't update as the "licence has expired", the whole point about the free version is that the licence automatically extends. It seems plenty of people are having problems with the licence since June 30th. If you are one of them do the following.

Download the current licence key from http://personal.avira-update.com/package/peclkey/win32/int/hbedv.key and save to your desktop

then go to the Avira folder in windows (default location is in Programs) and scroll down the file list to FACT.exe, double click it then click the link at the bottom which says that you already have the key, when the dialogue window opens click the hbedv.key link on your desktop and it will then check the key and update the licence.
