Hi all, posting on behalf of my girlfriend.

She has an 02 Mini for the last number of years but over the last 6 months has had a lot of issues with it - new exhaust had to be fitted, problems with the brakes and a few other things.

She recently got it fully serviced (approx 2 weeks ago) then today had to get the bearing and hub done on the front drivers side.

She has been going to the same mechanic for the last while and personally I think he is a crook so my questions are

    - Should the fact the bearing was almost gone have been picked up during the service?

    - He charged her €210 today, would that be about right for what had to be done?

    - Ive advised her that she should go to a reputable/branded garage next time there is a problem with it, is there any point in this. I know it would probably cost a wee bit more but I think she would have more of a come back should anything go wrong.

Apologies if the above sounds dumb, I know zilch about cars!

    :)

What grounds have you to believe he's dishonest?

If you know zilch about car's I wouldn't be advising her to go to a dealers as she'll be extremely broke after. They know how to charge.

Also on an 11 year old Mini, exhaust parts, servicing and brakes being replaced are common things to go around that age btw. Wheel bearing's go over time.

I would hope you're not basing the fact that the car needed this work on assuming the mechanic is dishonest...

Yes, its an 11 year old car, lots of up keep required.

Forgive me if I caused offence, it certainly wasnt my intention.

The reason I think he is a bit off is because of how acts towards her, evasive when questioned, not answering calls/messages, difficulty getting him to put into writing exactly what work was carried out/parts fitted, stuff like that.

Do you pay cash? Not putting anything down on paper might have more to do with ahem tax efficiency.

    Aye,it's always cash payments.

Didn't think of the above tbh.I work in insurance so I always advise anyone I'm speaking to about matters to get things in writing, purely for protection purposes.
