Multimedia Thesis

Hi there, I'm about to go into my final year of Multimedia and I'm really confused about what's expected of us for our thesis.

There doesn't seem to be anywhere we can get any good information from, the School of Communications section of the website has some info but it's general and not Multimedia-specific. Everybody in my class seems to say different things.

Do we have to do it in groups? What's the min/max allowed in a group?
What kind of projects do we have to do?
Can we do a thesis based around one module or do we have to mix media? (Might seem obvious but I just don't know).

I'd really appreciate if someone could give me some information on this, or even direct me to where I could find information! Thanks in advance :)

I'm in a different course but a friend of mine did your course a couple of years ago.
He did his project in a group of 3 and had a mixture of video/audio.

It's probably best that you contact a lecturer/course coordinator though to find out exactly what will be expected.

    I graduated last year.
Min for groups is 2 max is 5 I think. Those are for projects, as an individual you can write a thesis, they try to discourage that, but about 10 people did that option in my year as they preferred not to rely on other people.
for groups you sort of create some kind of multimedia project, and write a production log, document everything you do and well as a short thesis type on the our research. You had to have a sort of question phrased at the start of the project that you explore and write about.

You get an entire module on preparing for your final year project where you will be shown previous year projects and told to start finding groups and brainstorming ideas. You need to have a presentation on what you will do by before christmas, and that has to be approved before you go on.

I worked in a group of three, we made a music video using actors we hired and recorded the music track, our research question was actually about narratives in music videos and how they affect the experience.

Now I'm really surprised you haven't learned where you can find out about past projects because their all in the library. The thesis/logs that got good grades are all on display in the library. ground floor, turn left after the turnstyles. Their often mixed up with the communication ones, but they are sorted by year. You really want to be looking through those to get an idea of whats expected of you.

Thanks for your replies guys. I know the best thing would be to talk to a lecturer or whatever but it's the summer holidays now so I wouldn't want to bother them, and my classmates are all getting in groups and stuff so I felt it couldn't wait till we got back.

I'm so relieved you can do a written thesis by yourself though, for something as important as my thesis I don't want to rely on anybody else but me! :)

Your lecturers will probably be working during the Summer, they don't take the entire Summer off just because we don't have class so I wouldn't worry about dropping them an email, if they're away they might not get back to you straight away but I doubt they'll be away until September.

    Hi there,

Im thinking of applying for this course next year. Im currently finishing a diploma in multimedia at the moment. I've heard people say they hated the course and it was very "computer based". I Love graphic design and web/app design. Not so good at computing or database.

Would you recommend this course to me? Im such a lost soul at the mo :(

Yeah, I would definitely recommend it for you. Yes you do everything on computers, but you're well able for it if you love graphic design and web/app design.

There are some compulsory coding modules but everyone struggles with them and you get through them, they're marked really easily because so many people find them so hard. Then you can avoid picking the harder app development module.

I really wouldn't get hung up on these though, there's lots of design stuff and you get to do a bit of everything :) Oh, and everybody in my class loves the course!
