Will I be denied BTEA?

    Hi everyone,

Last year I received Back to Education Allowance while I completed a Level 6 course. As I was unable to find anything other than unpaid work placements during my course, the BTEA really helped me out. After I finished in May, I had to go back on Jobseekers.

Last week I got accepted for Level 7 at DIT, when I asked the person in the Social Welfare office if I can apply for BTEA again when I start Level 7, they said no problem.

However, I got a letter today from Social Welfare, telling me they want me to attend a meeting where they will discuss employment and training opportunities.

Now if they help me find work, I will welcome it as I am sick of being unemployed, but I'm not too sure about them offering me training as the only place they will probably send me is to do some FAS course. I've already done a course with FAS, to learn MS skills and it was good, but I have my heart set on doing the Level 7 course at DIT.

I don't mind doing another course if it is just for the summer months, but if it runs through to September and if I leave to go to DIT will that mean Social Welfare will not grant me the Back to Education Allowance?

As I already mentioned, the BTEA was my only form of income last year and unless I manage to find work, then I will need BTEA.

I would hate to have to throw away my opportunity to get a degree, just to do some training course that I have either already done or will be no use to me in the long run.

Does anyone have any information? Would Social Welfare give me a hard time if I choose a Level 7 course over something they have sent me on?

    I'm stressing out over it.

That's a standard letter, just go along to the meeting and say you have been accepted to do the Level 7. They won't give you a hard time, just be sure you have proof you are still seeking employment though and bring it along.

They won't give you a hard time. Best to turn up to the appointment but bring your documentation showing you have been accepted to the Level 7 at DIT and that you have already spoken to BTEA person at Social Welfare about continuing BTEA in September.

Thank you, I forgot to mention that I paid a deposit yesterday, I will bring the receipt too!
