Looking for help to identify unusual bird sound

    Hi,

I live in a remote inland hilly and moorish area and on summer nights, especially when it's dry, I hear a strange warbling sound which I presume is a bird.

It's a very unusual low almost vibrating call. It doesn't go up or down a note, it just repeats... it's very hard to describe!

I have done an exhaustive Internet search and cannot find anything that really comes close. Water and marsh based birds are nearest, for example the Little Grebe, but this sound is much lower and flatter.

I've heard this call all my life and I think I'm going mad, so I'd appreciate if anyone has any suggestions.

It's not a water rail, corn crake, snipe, nightjar, ring ouzel, pheasant, grouse, sedge warbler, curlew or heron.

    Thanks.
