Printing & Framing 16:9

    Hey Folks,

Said I would ask here in case someone might know the answer

My camera shoots 16:9 and I've come to the conclusion that it is impossible to get these printed, let alone framed!

Any ideas, or suggestions? I'm guessing I'll have to print larger and trim the edges, but that doesn't help with frames!

And please don't tell me to crop.... Thanks

    Tal

You could plot them on a white background. I use the collage function in Picassa: bring the 1 pic into collage option, select a background (white?) and press create. Then crop the collage, leaving white border around pic. But crop the collage using a regular ratio, 6x4 for example. Then move the info onto your key and print it anywhere.

You'll be left with a print with your pic plotted onto white paper. So pick the size you want and then pick a frame you like off the shelf from a shop you like. And cut the print to fit the glass.

Or if you'd like to mount the pic then place it within the frame and measure carefully for the mount required and then have one cut for you. It's really not expensive and it gets you a good professional finish as you can bring the mount in as tight as you like onto the picture.

But then I am left with a white boarder?

not impossible if you are willing to go for a custom print / custom frame ?

Custom print doesn't need to cost the earth (Steve 360dpi does that and as far as I know he'll print any dimensions you are looking for - and I might add in a recent comparison of prices with respect to enlargements which I was having done (albeit standardish sizes), I found that he wasn't much more expensive - and at times cheaper - than the high street mass produced/mediocre quality stuff. And as you may have seen at boards events his quality is really good).

Framing is a different story and a custom frame can cost depending on how fancy you want it. Again Steve will advise you if going the custom/custom route, or try your local framer - print from Steve, Frame locally. I've done that too. But generally you won't get a cheap custom frame as there is a decent amount of manual effort that goes into them (easier, if you have the right equipment).

i print 16:9 and frame 16:9 all the time

it does depend what you want

i make customer frames, mounts etc

if you wanted ready made frames and option is, buy bigger readymades, for example 20*16, get a print and custom mount done,

its very common in the art world to leave a wheight or drop at the bottome of a frame, so for example extra inch or 2

I meant to put in my OP that Steve would be my first choice!

Custom is not an issue for me, and I'm looking at just standard / basic framing (nothing fancy)

If it's all viable and cost effective, then I'm planning on doing the peoples photography :)

Only if you want it and how much you want is up to you. You measure the mount in as tight in as you like to the pic. If you want zero border showing it'd be best to subtract 2mm from top, bottom, l and r. Just to be sure and give you some play room.

    Got it?

for peoples photography, dont bother framing them, not worth spending money on a lot of stuff

just print and mount, make the mounts a standard frame size

that way you can stick em in a standard frame if you want at a later date

the fine art trade guild standard is 5mm for each edge, although i generally work to 5 mm on each dimesion, so 2.5mm

the reason you need this is the paper will expand and contract at a different rate to the mount, if you dont have an overlap the edge of the print can appear through the expansion and contraction
