Giant Roam 2 - Any thoughts?

    Hi All,

Getting bike on b2w scheme, considering getting the 2013 Giant Roam 3. I used to be fairly into my bikes and was a bike mechanic before but been a few years away from it at this stage. Had a look at this bike in shop and ticks all the boxes. Have always found Giant to be a decent brand and mostly well built and capable.

I am planning on using it mainly on the road but more as a leisure bike for light cycles on the weekend and maybe the odd longer cycle (50km ish). If it was only longer road cycles I would probably have went with a racer (possibly with straight bar such as Giant Rapid) but use around streets in city and carrying training gear would make the front suspension handy, especially as can lock out when needed.

    Any thoughts on this?

    Chris

Really don't think you'll need the suspension, it's quite a lot of extra weight to haul around. No suspension is necessary for city streets, and definitely won't help when carrying gear. The equivalent Escape or Rapid would be a much nicer ride.

I regularly ride off road on my Giant Escape, bouldery and rocky trails, never needed suspension.

I know what you mean completely. Also have slight desire to try some light open trails possibly. Done a good bit of mountain biking back 10 years ago and would be interested in trying again. Always liked a nice day on a forest trail.

I have one, commented about it here http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=85296063&postcount=4
I find it a great bike.
I don't know how it would handle hardcore mountain biking but it's great on forestry roads

Definitely not going to do any hardcore biking but light trails. Really tossing up between the Roam and the Rapid but I think I may be leaning towards the Roam as it will allow option for some light off road.

Got the Roam 2 for my son. Nice bike. Hydraulic brakes and fork lockout. Certainly wouldn't be a patch on my mtb, but seems to be more than adequate for canal paths. Overall a decent bike and if, like everything, it's looked after it should last a good few years.

If you want a bike that would be perfect for commuting and still usable for light off road riding have a look at something like the Giant TCX or Specialized Tri-Cross.

Not into drop bars at all like on the TCX. Would certainly not take a bike with drop bars on any forest trails.
