I know there's been a few threads on this before and recommended fondermenders etc but I've been reading about Applecare + extended warrranty that covers lcd damage/water damage etc and Apple basically replace your device.
Has anyone gone this route before and can tell me how it works etc?

well Igot through to Apple and they wanted €241 to replace it.
A chap at work replaces phones and he did a fantastic job my gf's samsung s2 so ordering the original part on ebay and getting him to do it..total cost approx €150.

I dont think you'll find a cheap&good iPhone 5 replacment screen (or a shop that does it for under €200) so I'd still advice to go with apple. Also see:
