I'm Staying At Bewleys Ballsbridge. Hilly Or Flat Is Fine

Ballsbridge, Killiney, Bray, Greystones, Avoca, Roundwood, Sally Gap, Enniskerry, Bray, Killiney, Ballsbridge is not a bad route.

Here it is on google maps -easy to extend to take in Wicklow Gap and Laragh if you want to go further.

I live close to there, here's a few I do...

90k to Blessington
70k around Sally Gap
Might be a bit on the short side for you, but they're two directions you can go from Ballsbridge.

If you want a nice scenic route I'd suggest Rathfarnham - Cruagh Road R116 (climb) - Featherbeds R115 - Glencree R115 - Sally Gap R115 - Laragh (food stop) R115 - Wicklow Gap R756 - East side of Lakes R758 then Lake Drive - back to Dublin via R114 to avoid the busier N81. The route can be done without joining the N81 at all.

Reasonable amount of climbing but some stunnings views along the way if the weather is nice! It's around the 120km mark full loop.

Ballsbridge out to r115 and over sally gap to Laragh, back over the Wicklow gap and up another side of Sallygap and back through Glencree and Stepaside.

Plenty of climbing, awesome views and the two gaps are the most enjoyable cycling I can think of. Won't find too many better rides in the area

Tough one to call exactly. I'd say you could allow 500-600m for the two climbs to Sally Gap, another 400m for the Wicklow Gap and maybe a couple hundred metres for that last climb. Maybe around 1,500m overall with all the little bits inbetween at a guess.

OP I'd use this for one day and then maybe another day do a flat cycle down along the coast roads.

I want a long cycle of saturday. It'll either be around 120km with a decent amount of climbing or 150km flat. First world problems!

The Phoenix Park has plenty of good road surfaces with little or not traffic that's assuming that the OP wants to remain close to his base in Ballsbridge.

Here's a couple of routes to add the suggestions above.

This would be a big day out, 100 miles and lots of climbing, but taking in some great scenery.
After Enniskerry, food/shops in Laragh, Blessington, Roundwood.

Eurosport (Sky channel 410) and you'll struggle to find a bar showing it.

As Jawgap says, you're very unlikely to find it being shown in a pub especially at weekends but on a weekday afternoon a quieter pub may put it on if you ask (presuming that no one else is watching golf, horse racing etc).

Thanks all for the advice. Here is the one big ride I did out of Dublin, got some shorter rides in Galway and Waterford. Please look me up if you ever find yourself in the US and are looking for ride advice.

Nice route, that was a good day out, and one of those hot days iirc. How do the roads compare with Boone NC?

Totally different. For starters, the only things Americans like more than guns and carcinogenic fast food is the ability to drive 80mph, everywhere. As a result, we have really nice roads, and massive cars hurtling down them. Thus, while the roads in Ireland are, broadly speaking, fn horrible, there are way fewer idiots in SUVs trying to kill you. You also have stuff like bike and bus lanes making riding in, and more importantly, out of Dublin, way, way better than almost every US city.

That said, it's way flatter than Boone. The climb up past the waterfall to Wicklow gap was downright pleasant: I never had to get out of the saddle, and certainly never worried that I might fall over dead, which happens here. A lot. The climbs along the shore in Waterford actually reminded me of Austin, TX: short, steep, and lots of nasty little descents.

We also have considerable forests around here, so it's rare to be exposed like you are pretty much everywhere I rode in Ireland, which makes your scenery better.

Also, while your roads are rough and uneven, I didn't see any deadly potholes like we get here. There was no sand, road kill, or debris to speak of, and Dublin was insanely clean, so while you may not go nuts paving, you certainly do a heck of a better job with upkeep than us.

The biggest difference, though, are your hedges. The lack of sight lines and no shoulders in the corners is definitely unnerving. Even up here where we have heavy rhododendrons they are cut back from the road and there is at least a few inches of pavement and a foot or so of gravel, grass or dirt where you can bail out.

Oh, and none of you wave. I waved at about a bazzillion bikers and none of them waved back.

thank you for pointing this out. was a biker. you nearly go out of your way on a motorbike to say hello to fellow bikers.

cyclist seem to be too interested in looking ridiculous in spandex to be waving at other people doing likewise.

the problem is common in the uk as well apparently.

I'm not long back from 2 weeks cycling in Florida and traffic passing at speed with inches to spare was the biggest drawback. In Ireland trucks are legally limited to 80kph (50mph) regardless of the posted upper road speed limit. In the US they may travel at the same speed as other traffic - it's frightening having a Freight Liner passing closely at 75mph.

Indeed but corners and bends seem to be uncommon in parts of the US making it tedious at times.

You have beautiful billard table surfaces with no vibrations but they seem cause more tyre wear than our roads.

And as for roadkill - I couldn't get over the amount of dead animals on Florida's roads. We would just have the odd bird or cat.

It seems to vary according to the area. I would usually give a nod or small wave.
