    Hi all,

I am interested in applying for the evening course, Psychology NUI Certificate, in Dun Laoghaire, College of Further Education, which starts in Sept. As I was not selected as a full time mature student this year, I want to try to bulk up my experience for next years CAO application.

The course carries 20 ECTS and is credited with the National University of Ireland, but as it costs €1,000, I dont want to throw money away on a course that wont get me anywhere.

Does anyone know if this course is a suitable step to full time education in Psychology or is there another course I should be looking at?
€1,000 is pretty much my limit.

Any advise on how I can better my chances of being accepted to college next year would really help and would be greatly appreciated!!

    Thanks,

    SB

Try PCI, I know that they do a postgrad cert. They may also deliver a general certificate in psychology. Not sure on the price range though.

Hi Spongebob, I know a good few people who have gone from that course to full time students in IADTs Applied Psychology course. Definitely worth while if you're looking to get into a BSc in Psychology :)

Completed the NUI Cert in Dun Laoghaire in 2012 and went on to the DBS H.Dip in Psychology last September (all part-time) which will take until next May. I can tell you that the NUI Cert was a relatively gentle and braod introduction to Psychology, touching off many of the important themes and historical figures and introducing topics that I've now seen in some more detail. The DBS H.Dip didn't have time for this kind of intro so I was very glad to have done it (and I really enjoyed it too).
However, I'm doing Psychology out of interest, not to pursue a career and I suspect that if that is your intention you might be better off looking to get into the DBS degree course this September, without doing the Cert first, as it's a long enough haul to get qualified without taking a scenic route - the DBS course would allow you to pay something around €1000 for the first term (until January) so I think the cost to you would be similar..
I have no affiliation with DBS and am only speaking from my own experience! :-)
    Good luck!
