Hi guys, bought an 07 traffic of my mate recently that wasn't running,he was stuck for money so I got it fairly cheap,I bought it with the intention of replacing the engine but since there so hard to get (hens teeth) I thought I might have a go at repairing the engine that's in it,the van starts and runs and to hear it tick over it sounds sweet but when revved up there's a knocking noise coming from the engine somewhere,I'm assuming its bottom end possibly bearings, which may not be so bad if that's all that needs replacing, anybody came across something similar to this or what did you do to solve it??

I think you might have been the one that got stuck, but how and ever, pull the motor, break it down and have a goo at the crankshaft bearing shells, carrier bearings and the end float - usually they've rubbed forward into the carrier and if they have, the fix, as they say, is not so straightforward. Or cheap. There's a good reason why the engines are scarce as used -much wanted. Same goes for the bleedin nutty ECUs... usual reason for the big ends knocking is poor/non servicing, so the rest of it may not be far behind.

Well I'm not in a major panic to get it going and the scrap value is more than what I paid for it so I thought I'd have a gamble with it,so would the worse case scenario be regrinding crankshaft and fit oversize bearings? I'm only assuming that it's bearings since its only knocking at high revs, would that most likely mean con rod bearings,I'm not a fan of Renault anyway if I get it going it'll be getting the bullet it can be someone else's problem ðŸ˜ðŸ˜

The fun is usually with the alloy carrier the bearings sit into. You could be lucly and just get away with bearings, but that would be a very short term(days/weeks tops) fix and it does not last at all. Don't sell it on to a mate if thats the route you go...:D

a friend needed an engine for one of these and was difficlt to find one. think a renault lagunaengine was fitted.

as an aside I am told the renault 1.5 dci is unreconditionable ,as bearings cannot be bought for them. this seems incredible. if its true maybe this is the same. nutting facker refers to an alloy thingy, sounds like keep away

Ya anything renault is usaully a pain in the rear end to repair,it would probably mean a lot of punishment but I might consider fitting the older 1.9 engine, would probably be a lot less trouble in the long run!!

The 2.0 was the solution to the troublesome 1.9

Had a spare hour today so I went at a Kangoo that's been immobilised(literally) for while now. It's a 1.9 straight d. Did away with the immobiliser, all good, ran grand, rang Renault for a new solenoid to replace the one I binned(I carefully cut the shroud with a plasma and toasted the old one but theres not too many other options) - none in Ireland, none in England and the guts of €200 if they could get one from France, the wires to it are all black(3 of) and the wiring diagram is unavailable(for "security reasons"). No ta.

Then noticed the pump was leaking Diesel badly, had been hidden by the shroud, so stripped and re-sealed the pump..the seal is rubbish btw..fun fun fun.. not. I hate Renaults, with a passion. The only well made bit of it was the security shroud which must have been a form of kryptonite. Rest is made of a combination of chewing gum and melted door-handels.

Haha,I've had a similar problem with a few peugeot partners with the 1.9 non turbo Diesel engine, had to cut around security piece on pump and replace solenoid with a normal 12v solenoid I got off Lucas for €35,wire it the key switch and away u go no more immobiliser :P,pity renaults cudnt be as straight forward, another Renault hater to the core here mate :P

The Renault solenoid usues a rubber tipped pintle that you can't replace with anything else - it has to be that solenoid or nothing. Instead of working on a pipe feed, it works on two small holes in the pump body that it blocks and unblocks. Great idea for selling pumps and parts, not so great if you have to fix one. Everything on the yoke seems to have been designed for either bad access, complication or just plain annoyance. Tupperware and pot metal piles of dung. The pump top case is held on with four screws where eight wouldn't be enough...
