    Can they really do that?

well if you spent allot of money and time developing a new variety do you not deserve reward. dont we already pay royalties to seed houses for breeding the best varieties. We dont have to choose to grow these varieties if we want, but People do grow these varieties as the extra income got from choosing that variety more than compensates for the small royalty

In college we watched a dvd about something like this in america, the company, forget who were going after farmers who used the waste seed or something like that, they hired ex cops to go after them it looked ruthless, i forget all the main points really.

What if they came along and got the patent for all natural ryegrass? Would you be happy paying another 100 euro an acre just for patent rights? I don't think it would come to that because the people and farmers in particular wouldn't stand for it but we still need to be vigilant and keep an eye on developments in this area.

its varieties within the ryegrass species they are trying to patent. I bet if say bayer developed a grass that could grow in really wet conditions and give 30% more yield do you think Irish farmers would pay the royalty. I sure would. You could still buy your ordinary ryegrass if you choose to plant it but why would you when you pay a small fee to get 30% extra

Dont think thats the one i saw, at the start there was a small chicken farmer who was being shut down cos they didnt like him killing the chickens outside. food labelling too was in it, the big companies wouldnt label where the food came from and the heads of these companies were also on the government board in charge of labelling
