How effective are forums.

Was curious if anyone has ever had a major change of opinion after engaging in a discussion on an online forum. I'm not talking about light hearted things. I mean on big topics such as religion, philosophy, politics or ideologies. That sort of thing.

Has anyone ever went into a forum with one opinion on these subjects and then left with another? Or at least left with a sincere intention to investigate the relevant information further and then perhaps rethink their position.

Seems most (but certainly not all) forums usually end up as pissing matches where people drop any discussion and descend into childish name calling. Which ,although entertaining, doesn't really challenge anybody's opinion on anything.I personally haven't had a major change of thinking but then I'm a pig-headed ****hole and I'm always right.

If I ask advice then ill be affected by response, sometimes change my stance.

If its about a non personal issue I haven't usually.

This thread has utterly changed my opinion on Dr. Hook. Very effective.

I can only speak from personal perspective as I sit here; watching tv scratching my nuts with one hand and typing like I am gonna conquer the world with the other so not very effective at all

Like in life when people ask questions they seek out the answers they want to hear.
    People don't want to change.
    That' involves hard work.

Sorry I've strayed from the Bitter About Life forum.

Yes, but in a slow but steady way, rather than a flash of revelation
