Places to visit in Ireland

My bf has a weeks holiday in a two weeks and we where thinking of going somewhere. His passport is out of date and we won't have it on time to go abroad so I was thinking of going somewhere in Ireland.

Does anyone have any ideas where we could go? We both live in Donegal so that is not an option also Clare is not an option as he is from Clare. We are both in our late 20's and just want somewhere where we could go visit attractions (we like historical stuff) and to chill. We'd be looking to go away for about 4 or 5 nights.

Also does anyone know if you need a passport when sailing to Wales, England or Scotland?

    Thanks for your help.
    Elaine :)

Could you not book your holiday abroad and then apply for an emergency passport? (I know that's what I'd be doing! :))
Otherwise....lots to see and do in Kerry

    West Cork and Kerry.

    Dublin and wicklow

sure just go to the north.
Giants causeway, bushmills, glens of antrim etc etc etc.
Belfast has the Titanic centre and plenty to keep you occupied.
    I could go on.
But its a damn sight nearer and less hassle than driving 6+hours to get to Kerry or whatnot.

And you can always get a ferry across to Britain (with NO need for passport if you are irish/ british) should you really need a change of scenery and if you book hotels in advance theres great deals to be had.

Costs more. Plus he'll have to travel to Dublin to make the application in person with all the relevant documentation and photos etc and then return a couple of days later to collect the passport. So it will probably mean him taking an extra 2 days off work. Not easy when you have a weeks holiday coming up.

I'm speaking here from my own annoying experience last month and I'm only 2 hours from Dublin. I wouldn't fancy doing it from Donegal.

Thanks for all your help and ideas. In the end up the passport came(on the Friday very last minute) and we went to Madrid for 4 nights was lovely over but very warm. Would recommend it for a few nights away! :)
