We all want to know what's best for our cars, pocket and patience. This thread is for you to post your favourite products in and tell people your thoughts. Hopefully we can follow the same layout as this post :)

    > In the ease of use section, it's a scale of 1 - 5, 1 being very easy to use and 5 being tough to use.

    > Value for money - 1 not great value and 5 very good value.

    > Product longevity - 1 doesn't last very long and 5 a little bit goes a long way.

Also I would suggest that you have to have used these products before posting, not just watched a video on youtube as they can often be edited to seem great.

Copy and paste this for your post:

    I'll start:

    Product: Gtechniq C4 Trim Restorer

    Available from: CleanCar.ie

    Price/Size: €28.95/15ml

    Ease of use: 1

    Product longevity: 5

Why I like it: It smells great, brings faded black plastic trim back to as-new condition with absolutely no mess. One or 2 drops on the accompanying cotton pads will do a full bumper and it will last for 2 years without fading. Also produces good beading for a few weeks after first application.

    Value for money: 5

Other: Great for any plastic trim inside or outside the car that has lost it's lustre. Negates the need for spraying the likes of "back to black" every week.

    Product: Orchard Autocare Iron Cleanse

    Available from: DetailingShed.com

    Price/Size: €15.95/500ml

    Ease of use: 1

    Product longevity: 3

Why I like it: Unlike the usual fallout removers like IronX, Iron Cleanse is a gel-type product which clings to paintwork/wheels so it can work for longer.

    Value for money: 2

Other: Although it smells horrible (as do all fallout removers) it does an excellent job of removing iron particles from your paintwork. These particles fuse to your paint from your brake discs, industrial fallout, truck brakes, train brakes etc. They cannot normally be removed by claying. Also, IronX swells paintwork in order to remove these particles. Iron Cleanse does not but it does a better job because it clings and you don't have to keep reapplying it due to it running off the surface.

    Product: Autoglym Quick Detailer

Available from: Halfords and other Motor Factors

    Price/Size: €11ish for 500ml

    Ease of use: 1

Product longevity: 5 - you can dilute it right down

Why I like it: Handy clay lube, and produces really good shine for the days after you waxed the car and and want that shine back

Value for money: 4 - pricey enough compared to Demon Shine but it's good stuff

Other: It smells unreal and is the type of thing that every detailer either pro or enthusiast should have. Can get great length out of it too if careful enough

    Product: Gtechniq ClearVision Smartglass

    Available from: CleanCar.ie

    Price/Size: €13.95/15ml

    Ease of use: 2

Product longevity: 5 (once applied it lasts 30,000 miles but when using it, you get 2 small bottles, one is the product itself, the other is residue remover both of which you have just enough to to 1 car).

Why I like it: Makes water bead on glass and run off immediately. Dramatically reduces the need to use wipers at motorway speeds. Reduces wiper blade chatter/jumping after a week or 2.

    Value for money: 5

Other: Apply with the accompanying cotton pads, let cure to a haze, use residue remover to do just that and you have glass that will bead so you have a c. 80% improvement in vision all around. You have to apply it to the windscreen 3 times but all other windows are only once. You actually won't believe how good it is until you are driving in heavy rain.

    Product: 1500 grit sand paper

    Available from:local motor factors

    Price/Size: 75c per sheet, A4 size

    Ease of use:5

Product longevity: this could be a 1 or a 5, it's used wet so as wet sandpaper goes very good.

Why I like it: easy to use and does a great job at removing grease oil and build up of **** from the engine and get it back looking nice and shiny.

    Value for money:5

Other: have the sandpaper wet. Rub back and forth on the aluminium cover.
Lots of elbow grease is required.
Don't let the sandpaper get dry.
It's handy to have an old cloth of some description to wipe up the dirty water.

I don't know if this has anything to do with a detailing product as such, but has helped loads in getting the engine bay back to original. :)

On another note my order from curran is waiting for me when I get home.

Can you really consider it good value when a bottle of rainX costs a few euro less and you get 200ml? I know you would have to apply it more often, a lot more, but it still lasts fairly long and a bottle will last you a lot longer than 30,000 miles!

I can tell you one thing, the difference in price more than makes it up for me when I apply the Gtechniq once and that's it ;)

Fair enough, I haven't tried it. For the difference in cost it's worth the extra work for me to use rainX, the bottle we have here I finished the last time I did my windows. It cost (I think) 3.99 punts maybe 4.99 back in the day! That seems like good value to me:pac:

It's like anything. If you buy the proper tool for the job, it often costs more but works a hell of a lot better. That's gtechniq in a nutshell tbh. So yeah, it's definitely a 5 in value for money.

    Product: Meguiars Endurance Tyre Gel

    Available from: Halfords and here

    Price/Size: €12ish euro for 478ml

Ease of use: easy to apply, smells nice. A small amount goes a long way!

Product longevity: Genuinely lasts the length of time between washes or possibly longer

Why I like it: Smells nice, gives a very good shine that lasts a long time and is easy to use.

Value for money: Expensive compaired to other tyre dressings but as you only need about a tea spoon per tyre it lasts a long time and hence is good value.

Other: The bottle leaks if you lie it down which is sh!t:(

Nice idea for a thread - good thinking Metz!
    Ded_Zebra wrote: »

I suppose everyone's opinion is based on differing factors!
To some people, time is money....or to put it better...their time is better spend doing something else; they might only have an hour free a week to do a quick job on the car.
No having to worry about re-applying trim / glass dressings, or whatever it may be, after every wash, saves quite a bit of time over the period of durability....so to that person its valuable!

But I totally understand your POV also....suppose what Im saying is, everyone has a different perspective :)

PS: you are dead right about the Meg's Endurance Gel - once opened (as its sealed with a foil under the cap), if it gets knocked over, it will leak - PITA! :(

    CON::

Massive throw off with this stuff to the wheels and apintwork. so much so that dust etc, sticks to it.

    Used it
Looked good unitl I figured why my wheels were getting so dirty afterwards.

Would have to agree with this also....there is a lot of sling, if applied straight from the bottle!!
Im not a fan of very glossy tyres, so when I apply it, or similar type products, I leave it 10-15mins before giving them a good rub down with an old MF, thats ready for the bin....it leaves a nice dark finish, that usually lasts two weeks, and the product sling isnt too bad then!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,302 ✭✭✭Supergurrier

The bottle of meguiars gel lasts ages but AG tyre dressing followed by turtle wax tyre shine for that killer finish

I'm sure you won't believe me you being "experts" and all. It sounds to me like you are using about 20 times the amount that I'm using. I have never got any sling from it. It can attract dust if you drive when it's wet/on very very thick, again this is not a problem if you put it on thin.

Thread's kind of going off topic lads!

If you want the best product to shine your tyres or just have a matt finish, Gtechniq T1 is your only man :)

I apply and liquid or gel tyre dressings with a paint brush, so Im not just lashing it on...and then its buffed down well afterwards. Sling is still a bit of an issue...really obvious on silver or white cars.

    On a side note...
Hoping to have a new tyre dressing product to test next week; 6-8 weeks durability in good weather, 3 in bad. Promises glossy look without the sling! Looking forward to that!

    MY FAV PRODUCT
    Product: Autosmart Tardis Tar Remover

    Available from: Cleancar.ie

    Price/Size: €30 for 5 litres - more than you'll need.

Ease of use: Simples. Clean surface, spray tardis, watch it bleed and wipe away. Dont leave it too long im told. As with all tar removers, wash and protect the surface after application.

Product longevity: Apply and wipe away. As for how many uses you'll get out of the 5litres.... I filled a 1ltr bottle with tardis, detarred my car, my parents car, my girlfriends car and did a full clean on my alloys. I might have used half a litre.

Why I like it: Its the best tar remover ive ever used. None of this, "yeah its kinda working" craic.
[PICS]Wheels washed, de-ironed and only tar left on them
    [PICS]After spraying them with tardis
    [PICS]Finished article

Value for money: €30 is alot to fork out, and as far as I know they only sell in 5ltr drums. It was worth it to me, because I clean lots of family members cars, and I love a good clean car.

Other:Buy with a few people and share the cost. Not sure if a tin container is needed for storage.

Product: Turtle Wax Ice wheel cleaner

    Available from: Halfords

    Price/Size: £7/500ml

    Ease of use: 1

Product longevity: So far, so good! Used on all wheels at least 4 or 5 times, plenty left in the bottle

Why I like it: So easy to clean brake dust off.... Similar effect as Iron X but less than half the price :)

    Value for money: 5

Other: Won't harm the paint on the wheels. Smells funky  And doesn't need any agitating, just pressure wash it off! although some bottles come with a brush....

I was gonna do up something about Meguairs last touch detailer and wheel brightener but is there anywhere in Ireland even selling it anymore?I'm running low. :(

I think we need another heading in these reviews....

"How it compares to other similar products Ive used"

Because say for example the only thing you've used is "Turtle Wax Colour Magic", you're going to think its fantastic! :pac:
I suppose, ideally, you should have used maybe two other products and compare what is good about each one.

For example...three different Wheel Cleaners on heavily soilded wheels
Product A: Diluted 1 part product : 4 parts water as per instructions on the bottle. Spray on, wait 2 minutes rinse off - wasnt great as it didnt dwell on the wheels. Changed dilution to 1:1, did a good job cleaning at this dilution, but would have to use a lot of product.
Product B: Diluted 1 part product : 6 parts waters as per instruction. Spray on, wait 2 mintues, rinse off - did an OK job, and fine if agitated a bit. Less product used, but agitation needed. Diluted at 1:2 almost no agitation needed.
Product C: Diluted 1 part product : 4 parts water as per instruteciton. Spray on, wait 2 mintues, rinse off - was more like a gel comparted to product A&B, so it clung on better, and did a better job of cleaning as a result. No agitation need, so its quicker and dilutes well too.

Conclusion: Product C was by far the best wheel cleaner. Although its a bit more expensive than the other two products, it actually done the job at the dilution rates stated on the bottle. If you only have lightly soilded wheels, then Product B, diluted at 1:4 would be sufficient for a non-agitation wash. Product A is a false economy as you have to use heaps of product to get any sort of result!

That to me is a better review to saying a product is 3 for easy of use, 5 for value for money, etc, etc, as I'd be screaming at the screen, compared to what though! :p

Autoglym HD Wax...using it now for the past 2 years and gives a fantastic shine to the car. Lasts about 3-4 months before needing to do it again.
Expensive at approx €60 but lasting over 2 years?? worth it in my opinion.

    Product: Orchard AutoCare Perfection
    Perfection-764x1024-1-.jpg

    Available from: Detailing shed

    Price/Size: €20 / 500mL

Ease of use: 1 - it doesn't get much easier. Spray on, buff off straight away.

Product longevity: 5 - 500ml bottle gets between 7-10 full car applications, including every piece of trim, glass, etc when used sparingly as advised. Protection lasts for 3-4 weeks as far as I've been told.

Why I like it: It's stupidly easy to use. I've used Autoglym aqua wax quite a lot in the past, and Perfection is the same sort of product, just much better. It bonds to any pre-existing wax/sealant, it works on glass, trim, everything.

I found out exactly how good it was yesterday, while driving 60 miles in rain. I didn't have to use my wipers once, the rain just beaded off the windscreen. It replaces the need for RainX, or any other specific glass sealant because you just cover all the glass in 3-4 sprays when you're applying to the rest of the car.

It also adds more depth and shine when applied. Fantastic product.

Value for money: 5 - Autoglym aqua wax is priced just about the same, and Perfection is in a whole different league. If you use it sparingly, 10 car applications with 3-4 weeks protection, and can be used on top of everything as a top-up, and on glass. Fantastic value for money IMO, and it's the last time I'll be buying aqua wax.

Other: A little goes a long way. Use sparingly, 2-3 sprays will cover large panels, and the more 'wet' the microfibre you're using gets, the further the little will go.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,930 ✭✭✭✭challengemaster

Product: Microfibre Madness Dry Me Crazy
    drymecrazy.jpg

    Available from: Detailing Shed

    Price/Size: 20.95

Ease of use: 1 - Really easy to use, as it's a drying towel :P Best method for use - fold in half, and slide along wet panel. Use the dry half to get any remaining water once whole car is dried. I got my whole car dried and didn't need to wring out the towel once.

Product longevity: Unknown yet - However I've been told that someone has theirs for 3 + years and its still working fine

Why I like it: Makes drying the car a pleasure, and do-able in under 5 minutes. When people talk about the right tool for the job, this is it. I wouldn't recommend any other drying towel above this one. Compared to the Megs Waffleweave drying towel, it's night and day. Compared to using microfibres to dry the car, you realise how much you were pissing in the wind with microfibres!

Value for money: 5 - You really need to use it to feel the satisfaction of this, but it's a perfect example of value for money. It's a true investment to add to your detailing toolkit. With its ease of use, the quality of the product, and the fact it'll last for a number of years, it's serious value for money.

    Other: go, buy it now!
