The mother is looking to buy a 2007 1.6 ford focus automatic. I'v driver the car and had it check out by a mechanic and it seems fine but I was wondering what they'd be like on petrol?

They seem to rev very high before changing gear but i'm not used to the automatic so might just be me.

I'm sure some of you lads have owned/driven one of these they seem to be everywhere lol

It's quite high up there in the worst cars I've had to drive over the past few years. It's just the auto box needs more power than the 1.6 has to perform adequately.

Thankfully, I wasn't in it for too long so don't know what fuel economy is like, but I suspect it's pretty poor as you've got to drive the Ares off it to get anywhere.

I have a 2006 focus 1.6 petrol manual. It does about 36mpg according to the trip or around 400 miles to a tank.An auto one will probably be a couple of mpg lower but that gives you some idea

I Have the same car, Automatic... I've always had automatics since an accident in 1986 so i've had a few different automatic cars,
The focus is not the best i've had, but no where near the worst either, we have had it nearly 2 years now, the auto box is a bit "clunky" but the wife drives it every day and she likes it and thinks theres nothing wrong with it,
it averages out at 8L/100km doing a 70km round trip to work each day.
The car is really nice, it's a Ghia model and very clean, Thinking about selling it soon if your interested.
So i suppose it depends how critical you are about things.
We had a slightly older Audi A3 1.6 petrol auto before that and it was very good all round.

My mother had a 1.6 Peugeot 207 automatic for a while. It was quite a nippy yoke (has the BMW 1.6 of that vintage) and reasonably fun to drive.

Thats shocking economy for a long run in a 1.6. I've seen under 8.0 l/100km in the 535d - also an auto.

she does feel like a very heavy ol car. My mother is a mad driver so that doesnt help. Her way of driving is literally putting the accelerator to the floor even when moving off from traffic lights  I'v tried telling her but I might aswell be talking to myself.

Opinions please. She is a nice little car all the same but i'm worried about the running costs. Petrol car has been fixed since...

but thats going in and out of town going to work, at lot of sitting in traffic,
it's about 6L/100km on a run up the motorway,
most people quote the best fuel consumption they ever got as if it's the same for everyday use, the average type of use is important, most of the time the car does the work run with the poor fuel economy,

If see is heavy on the pedel it won't help with the fuel costs at all,
the running costs, servicing etc. have been reasonable but it is heavy on fuel and my wife drives it very steady.
The Auto box in the Focus is very old style, not the smoothest so i don't know if it would like the foot to the foor style of driving, i'm not slating it but there are better available.

OK, so my average consumption over the last 4k kilometers is 9.0 l/100km. A lot of that are 15-20k runs and driving through towns.

So even that .. 8.0 average for a 1.6 focus versus 9.0 average for a twin turbo 3.0, points to one of two things. Either I'm driving like a nun (which I certainly am not) or there is something up with the 1.6.

I've had 2 of them and they were both the same so i can only say that about the focus i have owned,
The father in law has had a 06 Reg, 08 Reg 10 Reg and now has a 12 reg. He loves the Focus but he has the Diesel with the last two because of the fuel economy.
The OP was asking about fuel economy, anyone else out there with a Automatic Ford Focus 1.6 petrol to give a comparison ?

There is - it's a crap 4 speed auto (possibly CVT rubber band technology), that saps all the power from the engine.

It's probably the same box from the Volvo S80 2.5T. 200bhp with a lovely 5 cylinder engine (detuned version of the same engine as the Focus ST got), but slow and thirsty due to a rubbish 4 speed auto box.

My average at the moment is 8.4l/100km, again over 4000kms. C180 2.0 Auto.

I have driven one of 1.6 Focus auto for a couple of weeks in Spain and it's an awful car, underpowered, very thirsty. I doubt you will see over 30 mpg.

    8 Litres per 100/km = approx. 35mpg.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,035 ✭✭✭ei9go

Honest John says 28.1 mpg urban and 33.3 average

Horrible car IMO. The gear changes are slow and jumpy, It feels heavy and slow. She is very heavy on petrol. I drove a 1.6 tdi focus today and that feels like a much better car...Don't think i'll keep the auto focus long......
