Confused about installing windows

    Hi,

I built this computer only 2 months ago. I installed Linux on it, but want windows (no I can use it fine, I want to play some decent train sims). So I'm confused about windows 8.

All I see is this 'upgrade' option. And I need windows 7 or XP to get that installed. I don't care about upgrading or anything. I just want a fresh install from scratch. Could someone please tell me (via link) or whatever what will actually work? I enquired in PC world and it's 79 euro. That seems awfully cheap. For a new windows operating system.

Sounds like the guy in the shop wasn't paying attention. The Upgrade version won't work for you.
Buying a full version of Windows 8

If you want to build your own PC and install Windows 8 or Windows 8 Pro, or want an additional operating system running in either a local virtual machine or separate partition (including a Mac), you can buy the Windows 8 or Windows 8 Pro System Builder products (OEM versions). If available in your country or region, you can buy Windows 8 and Windows 8 Pro System Builder products at participating stores, but you'll need to ask a sales rep for more info. This version doesn't include customer support.

    Note

System Builder versions of Windows 8 require hardware that has the Designed for Windows 8 logo and are touch-capable.

You can only use the upgrade if you already have a legit windows license to upgrade from.

The upgrade kills the old license.

OEM can't be transferred separate to a PC, so you'd need to upgrade from a non-oem version.

I take it you've looked at WINE and code weavers ?

Other options are trial versions of windows server , up to 120 days at a time,
second hand license ( non-oem only and rare creatures , most licenses on ebay would not count )

Hmm. The trial version of windows server looks good. Windows server 2012, I might try that. I just need any windows based system until I can afford to buy one.

As long as I can use firefox and maybe install a train simulator, I don't care.

dig around , there are lots of aticles on the web about tweaking windows server for use as a workstation

adding or removing options, and changing settings such as giving foreground tasks priority
